emulsion paint brand recommendations

I am about to redecorate a large bedroom and went into Homebase yesterday to look at colours and brands. There is huge difference in price betweeen the top of the range Farrow and Ball and Homebase's own brand. Is it worth buying the "better" more expensive brands please?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Personally, I would use Farrow & Ball every time. Excellent coverage.
They make paint in a traditional way with old-fashioned ingredients and I rather suspect that the own brands and some of the more popular brands are made differently and contain "chemical" ingredients. I think F&B simply use more superior ingredients.
If you buy F&B wallpaper, they print it to order!!Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
All paints are 'chemical'!
The best I have found in terms of ease of coverage and colour quality is trade Layland, my local paint store mixes it in any colour to order (about £23 for 5L). Check around locally to see if you have something similar as the people who work there usually give really good advice too.0 -
Dulux, Crown and Johnstone's/Leyland Trade Paint only!
I always avoid retail & 'own brand' versions.0 -
Lol. Trade is the same as retail as it comes out the same vats.
Thats what the man at Dulux told me anyway its just marked up on price.0 -

I suppose it depends on what you mean by chemical. F&B use natural pigments in many of their paints, rather than a colour produced in a laboratory/factory.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
I only ever use Dulux, I have tried the rest and was not impressed. Crown paints come in second place IMHO0

The retail & own brand products were manufactured in batches totally separate from their premium paint.Quincy wrote:Thats what the man at Dulux told me anyway its just marked up on price.
It is a very good product admittedly...but is primarily for use as a first coat application on new plaster, plasterboard and interior masonry surfaces.
Personally, I would use a 'vinyl' emulsion as a finish on interior walls.0 -
Trade paint is slightly thinner.
I always buy branded paint from trade counters -much cheaper and bigger pots.
If I am after bog standard white gloss etc then I tend to buy from screwfix.0 -

I will second this
I did 2 rooms with the stuff the first coat covered everything on bare plaster walls fine unfortunalty I wasnt good at knowing where I had already done and went over 1 section by mistake so ended up doing a 3rd coat and it looks great all over.0
