Please please please ask friends as the chances of getting a virus free version of Windows XP Home from the dark side of the web is nill. Someone you know must have a copy.

Ok so If I get a friends XP Home disc and use this with my licence key is that OK ie legal?

I spoke to packard belll they advise the recovery media isnt anylonger available due to its age.

I have been on their website and found the drivers "I think" here --> http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php?i=6945490100&psn=031568520141

SO XP Home & my licence Key & the above link will restore my pc?

    Thanks
    Regards,

Yes, and easily the best way (but makes sure the copy matches your license)

    Pardon me?

I can't think of anywhere legal that you can download Windows unless you have a MSDN subscription. Typically if you do use the P2P stuff either the file will be infected or the exposure to that P2P network will infect your machine.

My Old PC running windows xp home wont boot up. I dont have the recovery discs either as the Hard Drive (recovery) was previously replaced. Would it be ok if I bought XP Home Edition from say amazon and install it? Or do I need to contact Packard Bell to get the recovery discs? Thanks for your help. I no someone will put me in the right direction.

    Thanks.

Ok - to break it into 2 parts.

    1. the OP has a valid license, which they intend to use, does it really matter where the media come form? The same 'illegal' argument could be suggested if he borrowed the media from a friend, but it is the key that is purchased, not the media.

    2. If P2P acquired software were typically evil virus laden spyware, then the networks would have stopped long ago. There is a proportion of fake and infected files out there, but they are, allegedly, in the minority.
...and some software is distributed legally via P2P, please don't suggest that
"exposure to that P2P network will infect your machine" because that just suggests you've read bad journalism.

...and my copy of the win7 beta (which I'm currently using) I got via P2P because the microsoft distribution network was solid for a few days. I did, however, get a valid key from microsoft so I am running the software legally.

    :(

  • Please don't insult me with the dail mail stuff, I would give it house room.

I am delighted you have a working beta of windows 7. I have fixed far too many machines that have been screwed by p2p. I think we will just agree to differ on this one.

Generally if you download something from the Scary P2P networks you should scan it with Anti-virus/spyware etc. Ive never been infected by P2P/Bittorrent for this reason. I would suggest that maybe the owners of the machines you've fixed were a little naive maybe?

It's all a moot point anyway, as the OP has a direct link to a XP Home disc. Not via Torrent or P2P.
