Windows XP Prob

My Old PC running windows xp home wont boot up. I dont have the recovery discs either as the Hard Drive (recovery) was previously replaced. Would it be ok if I bought XP Home Edition from say amazon and install it? Or do I need to contact Packard Bell to get the recovery discs? Thanks for your help. I no someone will put me in the right direction.

Thanks.

well if the harddrive recovery files are gone you will have to get a copy of windows from say amazon and do a full install.
Anyway, what is the hardware specs of the computer? Cause you might find your computer is going to be a snail with the updates to SP3

  • you should have the license key (maybe on a sticker on the side of the computer) in which case you just need to get (maybe borrow/download) a copy of the disk (but make sure it's same version..ie home OEM etc...)

Where can I dowload a copy of XP Home then? Microsoft?

  • Why don't you call Packard Bell and explain the situation and ask for the media to be replaced? It'll probably be cheaper than buying XP and a lot less chance of ending up with a dodgy copy.

Still doesn't mean that it is not hardware related. If there is a motherboard fault then it will not affect the disk.

If all is ok remember that a clean Windows install may not install the drivers for all of your devices. Best make sure you have the drivers for those.

I can't suggest any 'dodgy' sites, but google might.

  • Please please please ask friends as the chances of getting a virus free version of Windows XP Home from the dark side of the web is nill. Someone you know must have a copy.
