Driving any car on own policy

2

Comments

  • My policy states quite clearly that I can drive any other car TP only with the owners consent but it MUST have insurance in it's own right. I would definitely check your policy before driving.
  • Why would you take a car to a dealers for repairs when your letting the tax and mot run out?

This would be the question any insurer would ask in the event of a claim. Probably think the sames as me and refuse to settle or pursue you for the settlement claims.

It doesnt sound right to me and I wouldnt do it.

If that is the case with your policy, then you need to check a valid policy exists for the car you intend to drive!

Unemployed? Didn't have the money? Didn't want to get into debt?

Why would you assume this was in some way fraudulent?
There are genuine reasons this could happen.

You might be in hospital, for example, or temporarily unable to drive whne the MOT runs out.
I see no reason to suspect fraud.

Absolutely....I was only offering this as advice to the OP, to check and not assume he/she is covered for all TP vehicles :p

    mine doesnt :p

mine says mcjordi is covered to drive another motor car or motorcylce providing it does not belong to him or on hire purchase to him on a third party cover basis only..there is no cover in force for damage to the vehicle

nothing above having insurance in place to start with or in an emergency.

nothing in the policy notes about TCO either

You need to be really carefull about this now, lots of companies are withdrawing this cover as it is being abused. Effectively you could insure a little 1litre old banger for a cheap price and then legally drive round in someone elses Merc or bmw legally, obviously this would cost a lot more even as a named driver.....

Some companies are also adding the clause "in an emergency"....

I did read in a paper recently, about a lad borrowing his mums car thinking he was insured. He had a crash, his 3rd party cover for driving other vehicles was invalid as it wasnt an emergency, he was sued for the damages to the other vehicles and prosecuted for not having insurance.

I did change my insurance to the one with the nodding talking dog as they havent yet added the "emergency use" to their policies yet.

    Do they define "emergency".
e.g. if you were driving with a colleague and they were ill and it was out of call center hours.
That would seem reasonable to me but it's not exactly an "emergency", although a 100 mile taxi would be expensive.

If you are worried about damage to friends car cant you add his car as a Temporary Additional Vehicle to your policy, then it has the same level of cover your car has and most companies will add this for as little as a day, there is a charge but for peace of mind it may be worth it!
