Lake District: Cocker Mouth

  • It depends what kind of things you fancy doing. Keswick is nice and touristy. There's lots of walks you can do near by. Whitehaven has a lovely harbour. Would you take a bike with you? Oh and eat at the Spice Club in Cockermouth if you like Indian food!
  • We have just come back yesterday evening from a two week holiday in the Lakes staying at the best campsite in Keswick overlooking Derwent Water. If you are not experienced walkers then I would advise not going up mountains like Skiddaw especially if you are only up in the Lakes for the weekend.

A nice walk round parts of Dewent Water would do you good and as others have said the Launch will take you back towards Keswick if you don't want to travel too far.Don't forget to take money for the launch fare and also for car parks because unless you are a member of the National Trust you will have to pay and some of them can be quiet expensive, even the NT ones if you have to pay.

One of our favourite walking areas is along the Newlands valley, park at the car park near Little Town and walk towards Newlands Church{very pretty inside} and then you can follow the paths towards Low Snab Farm where if you want you can have a pot of tea or coffee and a piece of cake for around £3 each.

This walk runs alongside the base of Cat Bells so you can look up as you walk along and see all the walkers as they make their way to the top.

Don't forget to take a map with you.We use the yellow Ordnance Survey{Outdoor Leisure 4.The English Lakes,North Western Area} will have the walks I have suggested. Are you any good at Map Reading? Also worth taking a waterproof top as the weather can change quiet quickly and make sure you wear suitable footwear, not flip flops.

Cockermouth is a nice small town and when we were there last week we managed to get parked in a bay in the main street so that we could park there for an hour for free.

Hope you have a lovely time and don't forget to take a camera....

    Fortyfoot,that bench seat looks familiar.We were up at Latrigg one evening of the first week and had the pleasure of watching the trail hounds as they came racing past a couple of times.They go at a fair pace{fast, lol}
  • Wow everyones responses have been fanstastic! Thankyou all for your input

You have all highlighted what sound like some fantastic places. i just hope we can make the most of them and see as much as we can.

Easy approach from the car park for Skiddaw.

  • Fortyfoot we got lots of photo's of the dogs haven't put them on the computer yet though as we have been busy getting all our stuff washed and the other bits put away. Some of the dog photo's are comical as they were going so fast.I have a digi camera with a largish screen at the back so could view them after taking the photo. We had met the chap as we walked up Latrigg who was laying the scent trail and when we got to the top we saw all the cars down in the fields below and then after about thirty minutes we heard them coming down the hill behind us in small groups. They did the run twice and a couple of them were having a few problems with the scent the second time around.Lovely to see though...

We stayed at Castlerigg Hall www.castlerigg.co.uk and had fantastic views across Derwent Water towards Cat Bells and Skiddaw

BB,You will love the Lakes if you go to the places we are recommending, although I think all of the Lake District is beautiful, although the military jets can be a bit noisy at times....
  • I would wholly reccommend going to Windermere or Ambleside, beautiful places. I live in Carlisle and really wouldn't want to be anywhere else. There are loads of good shops and coffee houses and the castle and Tullie House are really good for visitors. Hope you have fun up here! xx

Windermere is too touristy for me. Too many tacky shops and bustle, plus it's exactly the opposite end of the lake district to Cockermouth.

PS. I hope the travelodge is good. I've been trying to get a couple of nights there on a cheap deal for over a year now but haven't managed it! Always seems to be mega expensive.

Ambleside is nice, if a little busy traffic wise, but shouldn't be *too* bad this time of year.

Grasmere is my favourite. But Keswick is certainly the place go to IMO if you haven't been to the lakes before.
