Lake District: Cocker Mouth

Hello there,

This coming weekend I have a two night stay in the Cockermouth Travelodge booked. So i was wondering whether i could plunder the wealth of knowledge this board provides to find out a few good things to do whilst we are up and around Cockermouth?

I know the Lake District is renowned for its amazing walks so that is an option, however we are not experienced walkers so some light idea trails might be good.

Thankyou all in advance :T

Oh no not Ambleside, its full of tourists and awfully over priced.
I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!

  • Hey nip across the road from the Travellodge to the squirrels pantry for something to eat,its cheaper than the T lodge. Try not to have a meal there as its microwaved stuff and not very appetising. The other thing is the car park is pay and display, its about £3 per 24hr period. They didnt tell us that bit. The room are very clean no probs there.
You could try parking on the road near the hotel but the locals get a bit miffed, as they would I expect. Take your own booze the bar is dear. Nip into Cockermouth tourist info office they will tell you where best to walk they are very helpful. Hope this helps.

Go to Keswick, not too far, walks round Derwentwater, or up Cat Bells, details of lots other walks in information centre. Up Skiddaw is great on a clear day.

If you go round the lake, call in for a scone at Hawes End marina! If is too far all the way round, about 11 miles, there are points at which you can catch the launch back to Keswick. Call in Dog and Gun for a bar meal.

there is a great ice cream farm across the road from the Travelodge, Wellington Jerseys Ice Cream Farm.. Other good attractions if you go up the coast to Maryport there is a nice Aquarium.

Cockermouth is a really nice town - also close to Keswick and the lakes.

  • If you head due south from the travelodge (actually through Cockermouth and onto the B5292) you'll come across Crummock Water, and Buttermere Lake and village. Towered over by Haystacks and the Honister pass.

One of, if not, the most beautiful parts of the Lake District. You could spend your entire trip just in the Buttermere valley and Honister pass and not be disappointed.

A good walk for non-walkers (like me) is around the Buttermere Lake, it's pretty much flat with good paths all the way around and wonderful scenery.

Knowing Keswick quite well, you paint a lovely picture. There is a very nice market in the main street on Saturdays.

    Looking forward to returning

  • He he, you could go and look at Sellafield...just kidding, Carlisle is pretty close with its castle, museum, Guild Hall, Hadrians Wall etc. Whitehaven and Workington are nice too for historical type stuff or things like the docks.

Have a look at the Visit Cumbria website, might inspire you.
