buying house-overlap of council tax

Hi im completing on my house on the 2nd of october and the tenency of my rented house is up on the 27th of october. I will actually be moving on the 17th so do I have to pay 2 lots of council tax?

not 100% sure, but i dont think you would have to as the property will be empty. Ive moved quite a bit and sometimes have an overlap of a couple of weeks and never had to pay for the 2 weeks im not in the house that ive left0

When we moved, we overlapped by about 3 months for building work, and payed no council tax on the new place until we actually moved in. We just told ealing it was empty Due to no heating or hot water, but they did require proof from british gas when we extended not moving by an additional month0

You will have a liability for both properties during the overlap but if one of them is unoccupied and substantially unfurnished you can apply for a Class C exemption for the period.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Just tell the council your move date - when the contract on your new place starts (I have filled out the forms online, very easy) IF you are moving in then. I have never paid two lots of council tax even when there has been an overlap as you can only live at one house at a time.I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!:j:j:jNegotiate, Negotiate, and Negotiate again.:j:j:j0

I had 2 weeks between getting the keys to my new house and actually moving in. I still own the old house which stayed furnished and became occupied by tenants the day I moved into the new one. I rang the council in advance and explained the situation, expected to be charged council tax on both properties for the 2 weeks, but they didn't start charging on the new property til the day I moved in.
I don't know what the official rules are but the council were fully aware of my situation and didn't charge me so I doubt you would get charged for both.0 -
