Moving to first house in a few days - Gas/Electricity help?

Hello all,
I'm moving into my first property in a couple of days from now. I'm unsure what to do in terms of arranging my gas/electricity suppliers. Am I meant to hunt around just now for the cheapest then call them up the day I move in to change suppliers? Can that be done immediately? Or do I need to use the exisiting supplier in the meantime until the changeover takes places?
Cheers
Ed

28 days for changeover. Some insist on a direct debit. British gas don't!
Who's it with now? They're the ones who need the meter readings.
