This challenge used to run every week (thanks to Moozie and PAP) but I have not seen it in a while so I hope no one minds but I need this to keep me on track ...

Hello everyone a010.gif. Welcome to the weekly spend challenege. This challenge is open to anybody, no matter what financial place they are in.

On this thread please post an amount of money you wish to stay below within the week (Sunday to end of working day on Friday). This can be pennies or thousands it depends on the individual. Then next Saturday report back and pledge for the following week. Feel free to update this thread with daily spends if that keeps you on track.

This is a little bit of fun but for many it highlights the fact that maybe that magazine/chocolate bar isn't needed. Hopefully your spending habits can be changed forever. clapping.gif

Moozie was the founder of this challenge and here is a quote taken from her around last year

The challenge is about incidental spending and not for stuff that should be budgeted elsewhere such as bills, groceries, debt repayment etc but you decide what to include at the end - this is about changing your habits and improving your recording of your spends more than anything else. Have a great week everyone and keep it low!!! Moozie x

Good luck everyone.:T

  • Afternoon budgeteers,

Last week I was red as I managed to have an unexpected night on Thursday night (I spent £70 which is awful:eek:) but I had a fantastic night.

Anyway I am drawning a line under it all and starting again. I think I have just got used to failing so haven't really been trying too hard recently. That is all going to change (I hope:o).

I have started a new way of budgetting which will hopefully mean I can stick to my disposable income each month instead of constantly going over. So I have a weekend budget which goes into my spends account (with no overdraft!) on a Friday and then a weekday budget which goes into the same account on a Monday. Any excess can get rolled over but if I have more than say £50 I will do something constructive with it. So my budget for this challenge will be what is left in my account on a Sunday plus £20 for the week. This probably sounds hideously complicated but think this might work for me.

So since Friday I have not touched my weekend budget.:j So my weekly challenge budget is £50. I am going to a gig tonight but not planning on having more than a couple of drinks.

    :hello:

good luck pointy - you're right, it does sound hideously complicated, but if it works, it works!!

i'm still on track for the tenner this week, car needs mot'ing asap because it needs to go. hopefully won't need that much doing to it but you never know :S

my plan for this week is to pull a tenner out of my account tomorrow morning and then not spend it for the week!! all animals are de-flea'd and i think everyting else is accounted for so come payday (wednesday) with any luck the straight and narrow beckons!!

    good luck :D xx

Your plan sound simpler than mine :o

It must be hard to do an MSE wedding as to me wedding always seemed ghastly expensive. How have you managed it?

  • Good luck guys..

I am feeling more hopeful this week so fingers crossed for us all. I have begun using my bike more so hopefully no (expensive) bus rides this week.

    Hey Pointy!

Mate, if it works for you it doesn't matter how complicated it might sound to everyone else! I expect my moneysaving will ultimately turn out complicated too!! :D

Its not been easy tbh, but once you start thinking about the bits that are really important (ie me, oh and db) it seems to put it into perspective! We never had a lot to spend on a wedding but we always planned about 3-4k, this one is costing about #500! Dress from ebay, homemade cake, photography student, reception in local pub etc etc. I know I make it sound easy, but this is my second wedding and I guess the hindsight of spending nearly 15k (and paying it off nearly 2 years after the divorce lol) on the first one gives me a huge insight on the bits that it's worth spending a bit extra on to get right, like flowers for example - I know a lot of people do their own but I prefer to pay the florist because at least that way you know the flowers will last the day! and rings - you have to live with them for the rest of your life so they've got to be good! i think the key to weddings is to make them your own. We're very much a pint and sausage and mash couple  so a champagne and smoked salmon wedding wouldn't be "us" - IYSWIM??

Thanks for asking, sorry for rambling on!! :rotfl:

  • I'm feeling really positive about staying in budget this week - good luck to all.

PP - I think your new plan sounds great. Personally I like my money saving on the complicated side. For one thing it helps me feel in control of my money, and if it were simple I'd probably spend more - but maybe thats just me!:o

True - good for you on the money saving wedding and some top tips. Lots of my friends seem to be getting married recently and each seems to be having a competition to be more lavish (and spend more) than the last. So its good to know there is another way!

I have been to 3 wedding so far this year and still have one to go. It amazes me how much people can spend on the most pointless things just because it is a wedding. For instance wedding favours what is the point in them? People take them home put them in a cupboard then throw them out in a few years.

It sounds like you have the right idea as for a lot of people it is about the wedding day but to me I think marriage is the most important part and being in huge amount of debt for a big party is not going to help things.

Anyway enough of my moral wedding ramblings. Yesterday I spent £8 on drinks at the gig which is excellent. Gig was brilliant but my ears are still buzzing this morning, that can't be good.

  • Morning all,

Can I join again please with a £20 budget for this week? I only stayed about £1 under last week, but it all helps I suppose.
Think this week will be harder, as I have already spent £10 on food yesterday (stuff for lunches etc) and am out for lunch and tea this week- and I have a wedding on sat night (but am driving! :-)) so we shall see, if I only go a bit over, I will be happy.

Thanks everyone and good luck ...

  • No money spent today and back from uni so no other chance to spend any..:j

Hopefully this will carry on after my little blip last week. Have decided that all this money I hopefully save will go into my tin for Edinburgh.. If there is a week where I spend no money however, I will just carry it on to the next week, IYSWIM..

    Good luck everyone..

    Hi Guys :hello:

Its ages since I joined this challenge and I know I've been letting my spending slip :naughty: so I'd like to rejoin (if you'll have me?)

So my target for this week is £15 from now until Friday. (starting myself back in gently;))
