Orange 500mb internet - use as modem?
Comments
-
i have set up my phone as a wifi gateway and surfed using my laptop on orange, you can do the same with bluetooth if your software supports it but not sure on a dongle.
personally i would see if you could do it via the phone as you only need one gadget0 -
Thanks for that! Well I already have a dongle so I would just stick it in that. It's just some networks don't allow you to use phone internet bundles on your laptop. Just want to make sure that Orange allow you to do this. I did call sales and customer services but they don't sound very convincing!0

So long as the phone supports it, it should be okay. I did it when i had no internet but needed to activate spore before i could play it.
Just make sure you don't exceed your 500mb allowance. It gets very expensive.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -
Found the answer to my question. Seems that you can't use handset as modem although I have read that many people still do so undetected.
http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/paymonthly/termsJune2009.htmlMobile Internet - up to 500MB anytime mobile internet browsing. Usage above 500MB will be charged at the rates set out in the Price Guide - see orange.co.uk/paymonthlyguide. Not to be used for other activities (e.g.using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video). Should such use be detected notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to all services which Orange does not believe constitutes mobile browsing. This may result in reduced speed of transmission, suspension of data browsing services and/or suspension of your account. For use in the UK only.0 -
I think you need to take those T&Cs as a pitch of salt.
I use Youtube on my phone with the Orange mobile deal, but that is classed as a non-Orange based internet streaming service.
Actually, I use lots of sites that are non-Orange based and they've never said anything to me.0 -
Basically using your phone as a dongle, I.E. using a cable plugged into the phone will result in extra charges.
Using your phone as a wifi hotsport or bluetooth hotspot (depending on phone/OS) is fairly easy and has never got me extra any extra charges.0
