Getting data from a corrupted hard drive

if you connect it to your new machine , then go into disk management(rt click my computer, then manage, then disk management), what is the description etc. of this old drive, ie basic, primary, network or something else?
It says
Layout: Simple
Type: Basic
File system: RAW
Status: Healthy: (Active, Primary Partition)
By the way I have got a program Getdataback working and is currently scanning the hard drive which is promising with cost $79 to copy files I want but is a small price to pay I guess if it works0 -
Getdataback is pretty good. I have used it with success on a few disks.0

Is that in the caddy or the old pc?
If it's in the caddy, you could try running chkdsk on it, it might not work though if it can't read the mft.!!

This is all by the connection I bought from maplin using my new computer. Unfortunately the getdataback stopped working as Hard drive made some weired noise and sounded like it wasn't spinning or something??
What do you mean about running chkdsk as I say not a complete techie know a little bit0 -
From the command prompt
type chkdsk f: /F (or change f: to match the drive letter for the usb drive)
to get to the command prompt, either click start then run and type cmd, or start search cmd for vista
I doubt this will work, but something else to try, sounds like the pc can see it, but can't understand the filesystem
Doesn't sound hopeful if the drive is making noises.!!

So, what do you suggest?!!

So, what do you suggest?
There would seem to be no option but to buy a new disk. The only way which the data may be recoverable from the old disk is to spend £hundreds on a data recovery firm. If the mechanics or electronics of the disk have failed, no software program can overcome this...0 -
The mechanics having failed hasn't been proven yet, so giving up isn't sensible at this point!!

Have you tried one of the boot discs? It might be very easy.0
