Cancelling Orange Contract (from CPW)?

Hello all,

I am now 24 months into an 18 month contract and want to cancel to move over to the o2 PAYG £15 a month offer where you get unlimited texts and internet. I have looked on the Carphonewarehouse website and also Orange's help page with no luck on how to cancel. So i was wondering if one of you could answer some of the following questions: -

1. Do i cancel the contract with CPW or Orange as i previously had a lost phone to report and Orange directed me to CPW as the contract was took out through them?

2. Depending on the above, what number do i have to dial or do i have to place my cancellation request in writing?

3. Is there a notice period (e.g. 30 days)?

Thanks for your assistance, it's a right pain cancelling contracts as the mobile phone companies never seem to be even slightly transparent on this issue at all.

Your 24 months into an 18 month contract. What did you do at the end of the 18 months? Did you renew the contract, sign up for a new one or let it continue running?

Generally if you have left it to continue running you should beable to cancel no problem, as its just 30 day rolling. I would try dealing with orange first, if they can't help then they will direct you to CPW.

If you want to keep your number ask for a PAC code from orange. When the PAC code is used the contract ends. The PAC code is issued by orange but CPW maybe able to get it on your behalf.

If you don't want to keep the number, just request over the phone you wish to cancel. Generally they will tell you to either write or email them a formal request to end the contract. Usually 30 days but i did one within 7 before.

However, If you renewed your contract then that must come to its end first, before you can leave, unless you want to pay a hefty termination fee.

  • Thanks for the reply mate.

I let the contract run so ill ring 150 tomorrow and see what they say. There hasn't been a phone that has caught my eye since the N95 to warrant renewing, and now I use my phone a lot less from when I took the contract out.

One point, I did lower my tariff when Orange called me to offer options about 12 months ago , this will not start a fresh contract period will it?
  • Just to confirm. Your contract ended 6 months ago ? If thats the case you call Orange CS on 150 from your handset. Either listen out for the options to say that you wish to cancel or just choose any department and ask them to put you though to retentions. They will try and give you offer to make you stay but if you want to leave you will have two options. If you dont want your number then just give 30 days notice and after that your contract will be over or if you want your number ask for your PAC code and then give it to your new network. WORD OF WARNING IF YOU ASK FOR YOUR PAC CODE BUT DONT USE IT WITHIN 28 DAYS THEN YOUR CONTRACT WILL CARRY ON AS NORMAL. You would then have to request a new PAC code.
  • :oBeat me to it.
  • As TalkALot mentioned, getting to retentions gets the best deals. By requesting a PAC code, it means you are wanting to leave (but if you dont use it, nothing happens)
Retentions are the ones that offer the best deals to existing customers, even better than your standard upgrade team.
I would not take any first offers, and definitely find the deal you want. Accept offers generally in the last couple of days if possible.

There are plenty of 'retention' topics on this forum within the first few pages for info on getting the best deal. However if you want to goto another operator then deal hunt for them online. I was on vodafone, but wanted orange or 02. So i moved even thou vodafone gave a better offer (£5 less) from the retentions department.

    I moved from a N95 8GB to a Nokia 5800. I like it more, but everyone differs.
