First Direct do this for free. HSBC do this for £3 a month for current account holders and free for Plus account holders.

First Direct texts you everytime a transaction happens on your account....
HSBC can do this as well, along with Lloyds TSB. All you do is register for text banking and set the ALERTS to Min Amount Alert - £0.01 Max Amount Alert - £0.01.

Barclays also do ..... oh wait...! :p (Sorry, cheap shot)

Yes they do - I use HSBC Plus and each transaction over £100 (what I set it to) shows via text either daily, weekly or monthly.....

I set my profile to alert me all credits whenever they occur, debits over £100 when they occur and a weekly snapshot each Friday with the last 10 transactions.....

I keep telling people how great HSBC are - thought you'd know this being a rival lol :D

    * Note for BM to go to the boardroom with 'HSBC do this, can we copy it'.... lol

Nearly all pre-paid cards offer this service, o2 are one of the last (being its the newest range of card).... The first (drum roll) was the Sun maestro issued by whoever (is it Tuxedo?)!

Just to clarify about Lloyds TSB's mobile services.

For free (if you hold a current account) you can receive a weekly balance with previous six transactions and an overseas transaction alert - both via text.

For £2.50 per month (free with Student (until August 2010), Premier and Private Banking) you can receive the Mobile Banking Pack. This includes: balance request with previous six transactions; limit alert (if you go within £x or over you arranged overdraft/ £0); high/ low balance alert and finally Mobile Banking.

Contrary to what TheEffect has said, none of Lloyds TSB's mobile services offer an alert per transaction via text automatically. However, as I've already mentioned, you can request a balance and previous six transaction at any point with the Mobile Banking Pack.

Halifax Bank of Scotland have also quietly launched a text alert service for Reward Current Account customers. This simple alert, sends a text when you are near £0 or your arranged overdraft limit.

I didn't think there was a "per transaction" text alert service, until TheEffect and never-in-doubt mentioned First Direct's and HSBC's. I would have thought getting a text every time something came off your account would be very annoying. High/ low balance alert makes much more sense.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Nah mate you set it up to suit, I only get texts for £100+ debits but all credits which aint that much cos no1 wants to pay money into my account lol...... so not many texts really, yea on bills it can be tedious but say you do loads of DD's on the same day, you get one text with them all listed, not like 10 one after another

Although I was already corrected, I've no idea what's going on with SMS banking and the like (whether Barclays is doing anything with it or not).

From a personal point of view, I'd have thought people would be more interested in moving towards mobile internet based solutions, allowing for significantly greater functionality. I know, for instance, that iPhone apps are being developed.

Whilst not everyone is in that position as of yet, I can't wait to see what comes about in the next few years. It's going to make getting rid of cheques so much easier.
