Are Mobility Scooters Allowed On Busses

Options
Hello,

Ive recently brought a mobility scooter. Its not one of the big ones its a sterling little Gem. Ive sent off for my free bus pass becouse I get higher rate mobility DLA.

I was now wondering if im allowed on with a scooter. Ive seen people in wheelchairs get on but never a scooter.

Thanks :j

They are on our local buses and trams, but only if there is room.

Unfortunately you might find your use of buses very limited. Even if your scooter is a very small one it'll still be longer than a wheelchair and you'll find it difficult to manoeuvre and not all bus companies allow them. You'll also have problems on some trains with some applying a blanket 'no', some requiring certificates to prove the size of the scooter or your proficiency in driving it (but powerchairs don't need these?!). Even my wheelchair is a tight fit on some, requiring brute strength to force it through the doorway - and no it isn't a bariatric one LOL

    Thank You Both,

Yes I can understand why they don't let them on. Will have to rethink :D

DH (bus driver) has said 'certain ones' but was unable to clarify what ones...

Call your local depo and ask them what ones, I'd guess the smaller ones that can actually fit on.

But if your service is anything like ours, the low liner buses are few and far between.

I wouldn't think so. I worked for a local dial a ride and scooters had to be strapped onto the railings on the floor, doubt many buses have any rails

Think about it, what if bus sudden stops, scooter flies forward and hits someone, compensation claims galore
  • I have a small travel one that can be broken down to fit in boot of car in 4 bits and can get that on my local busses here in Preston
