That link that goes to a holiday comp on here wasn't working at first but I believe it is now.
  • When you click on a mailto: link Windows will by default open whichever mail client is currently installed. What web browser are you using?

Sounds as though you haven't set up IMAP access on your AOL account - see http://about.aol.com/faq/openmailaccess
  • If you go to ToolsInternet Options and select the Programs tab you'll see a list of programs used for certain tasks. One of them is e-mail; you can change the defaults by choosing alternatives from a list. Unfortunately, AOL webmail isn't one of them. It is possible to add it, but I can't find any detailed instructions on how to do so.

For the moment, you have two options: either configure Windows Mail to handle your e-mails, or use an alternative browser such as Flock or Firefox.

thoght it was going to work followed all the instructions but when tried to send mail i get mesage saying there was an error

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.
The rejected e-mail address was ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Subject 'hi', Account: 'imap.aol.com', Server: 'smtp.aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 556, Error Number: 0x800CCC78
