    Hi Globalds
RFA came up on Warship the other night - you're right - accommodation was a lot better!!
There's so much to think about - good job she's got plenty of time!
Its made me think about my Dad - I'd love to find out a bit more about his service career. Is there a central records office that I could contact?

There is but they wont tell you anything.
The best wy is to find out on what ships/shore establishments he worked on and take it from there.
  • I have a cure for sea sickness learnt after my 22yr service i totally recommend the RN a great career see the world as you pass it great mates a good life

You obviously have little experience of the armed forces then.
I did my basic training over 15 years ago, and then went on to be an instructor.

It certainly has not got easier.

So you think that new recruits being able to send their washing away to be laundered and pressed for them rather than washing in a sink like we used to do is hard? You think new recruits should be allowed mobile phones during training? You think that only one kit muster is sufficient? What happened to turnout, discipline and bearing.

God help us if you were an instructor! :rolleyes2

Once again, shows how little you know!
I left about 10 years ago and i can tell youwith 100% certainty that:
    - All washing was in sinks
    - All laundry ironed by the recruit
    - No mobile phones until after basic training
    - 3 kit musters ALWAYS.....(PO's/Chiefs/DO's.....if all achieved then pass out)

I also still have a hand into what happens at training establishments (though not so much Raleigh), and the standards certainly have not dropped.

I was bloody good at my job so please try not to have an opinion on my career without having a clue what i did as it smacks of ignorance.

God help us if you were even in the mob............:rolleyes2

Army wife - toughest job in the services!!
Naval boarding school - not for the faint-hearted!!
    One life.
  • How about the Merchant Navy for one of the big oil companies. Both Shell and BP have LNG ships, which a clean ships with fantastic accommodation blocks! Great tax free pay too.

You don't hear of many women in the Merchant Navy. My Granddad was. It must have been in the late 40's/50's. The whole family ended up moving to Hong Kong and then Singapore where my mum met my dad who was in the Royal Naval. Its obviously in the genes!!
    One life.

    Part of the Furniture
Joined up the day after my 17th birthday. Had a fantastic time, and it gave the very best possible start in my adult life. Would thoroughly recommend it for anyone who has a bit of self-discipline, self-respect and a willingness towards team-work (for when you're working and playing hard).

My recommendation for your DD would be to join a recognised youth organisation which has similar values (sea-cadets, brigade, guiding etc.) and most definitely go for a visit to the careers office.

The one thing that initially attracted me to the Navy over and above any other service, is that whilst there's plenty of equality etc. they never forget you're a lady too, even though everyone mucks in and does similar jobs (except on subs!) - you don't get anything easier, just sort of different.

    Best of luck x

Well, that shows just how out of touch you are.

If you were to visit Raleigh now you would see that recruits are given yogurt shakes and nutri grain bars because they don't think they get enough calories in the galley, new recruits only have to complete one kit muster successfully, no more press up's for gobbing off as that is now "bullying" and things like running up to the fire school with a mattress on you back are history. Recruits can also now have items sent away every week to be washed and pressed. Mobile phones are allowed during personal time.

My original post stated "the training is a doddle now..." not "the training was a doddle ten years ago" Come on... its not rocket science.

Bet you were a dabber :rolleyes2

Maybe you should have got a better NAMET :rotfl:

Quick update - DD1 had an 'informal' interview with Navy careers yesterday. They have advised entry at officer level but would like her to go back at 15yrs9months for an update.
She's got plenty of info to be going on with and seems really enthusiatic so thanks for all the advice.
    One life.
