Dear all,
Because of 'line length' I can't get broadband at home, up till now I've used a combination of dialup and mobile bb, which I would be happy with but only gets 2G, phone signals are just as difficult round here and 2G is as slow or fast as dialup. But I'm now getting seriously fed up with it. I did think that after the publicity about the government document published a few months ago, and accompanying publicity, that things might improve but there's nothing on the horizon it seems.
However I stopped an engineer in the street recently and he told me unofficially that if I apply for bb through BT, they will then have to make a report about my problem and I can then take it higher and they will have to find a way of connecting me - apparently they've been given a directive to sort it for individuals who push it, though they keep it quiet. I'm much nearer another exchange than my own so would probably be able to be routed that way, or there may be other ways too. Does anyone know if this is right and if it would work? I'm more than willing to do it but it's a bit of a pain having to go through all the application again/ engineers visits etc etc. if it isn't right. I've been there several times before. Also it removes my choice of bb supplier though maybe that doesn't matter so much. Just wondered if anyone is an insider and knows about this scheme.
Many thanks
DS

It's a Government policy to improve broadband access, however it isn't a right (and I suspect it NEVER will be for everyone). If your local loop isn't connected to the other exchange (which it won't be), there is nothing that BT can do about it.
You could get satellite broadband - have you looked at that option?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

golly, that was quick, thank you. Yes I've looked into satellite, it's far too expensive. There are a few other options but mainly for communities, -in my case, we're very isolated individual houses.
Oh well, looks like a non starter then. Thanks very much again

BT are releasing a new product soon which will help people with long line lengths, giving people 1Mb up to 12km away.... see http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/2009/09/15/bt-significantly-extends-coverage-of-uk-land-line-broadband-services.html0
