Iphone 3G v 3GS - which one to buy!??

Hello all,

I am in a bit of a quandry. Basically, I would dearly love to buy a 16gb Iphone 3GS. The problem is the cost.

I am lucky enough to have a 30% open discount code which unfortunately doesn't apply to the 3GS but DOES apply to the 8gb 3G model.

I am not sure if the discount will ever apply to the 3GS so my question is this, which phone do I go for?

The 3G is free and will cost £31 a month after the open discount whereas the 3GS will cost £87 for the handset and £44 for 9 months followed by £34 for the next 9 months (using Martin's clever formula). So 3G = £558 over the life of the contract while 3GS = £789 over the life of the contract.

I'm really not bothered by compasses (augmented reality apps are only just getting started), music (I have an Ipod video) or camera strength (I use my own digital camera). I'd be using my Iphone for phoning, texting, the web and the apps. Is the 3G really much slower for these than the 3GS? Is the battery life much worse?

I could get the 3GS by buying it outright and getting a simplicity sim (with the £100 cashback from Quidco) - this method has been mentioned several times but no-one seems to have realised that once the year is up, you have to pay an extra £10 a month for the web-bolt on!

So what do you all think? Go for the 3G or push the boat out for the 3GS? If I got the 3G, I'd need to hang onto it for 18 months and then upgrade to whichever model Apple release next - I'd still have the fantastic discount deal though....does anyone know if the open discount might ever be applied to the 3GS? That would solve all my problems!!

You can choose the web bolt on as part of the Simplicity deal for no extra cost. So it lasts for as long as have the Simplicity contract. You can't have the PAYG free wifi and web at the same time as Simplicity.
