WoW problems..

Options
Hi All...
Please be gentle with me, I'm not the most technical girlie around, but need a bit of advice. My DS has a subscription to World Of Warcraft, and lately the "latency" on the game is high, around 600 (?!). My DS says it goes up after I've been on the phone..Is it something to do with the connection, or my telephone, or is there another different reason this might be happening?
Thanks in advance..

If it goes up whilst you're on the phone, and assuming you're on broadband, I'd take a look at your micro filter(s). There should be a microfilter for each appliance connected to a phone socket; if not that's a place to start. If you have the correct filters in the right places then you may have one that's broken (they do break after awhile).
Not knowing your set up it's difficult to say how to go about finding out what's going on.
Un-plugging extension phones from their sockets and seeing how you get on is a start.
You also might have a rubbish line; is it crackling?

Ive had a few problems with wow a few times, ive found closing down any programs not in use on the pc used for wow and if theres a laptop connecting wirelessly to the router then turn it off
  • Thanks for the tips. Have ordered a new filter (just in case), although through the day today the "latency" has been below 150, but as soon as it got to 6pm it shot back up again to the 500's. We thought it was to do with the me using the phone after 6, but I've not used the phone at all today

  • if you are wirelessly connecting check your router to see what is logging in when you see a spike - may be someone piggy backing on your network if it is unsecured.
  • The network is secure, and according to my laptop the signal strength is excellent. Have wired the PC to the router now, and it's better than it was, but still has "latency" in the 400's, which increases when DS performs a task.

Is anyone else using other computers in the house? Downloading, torrenting etc?
  • Hi Lokolo..
I have a laptop in the house. When the laptop is on in the day it doesn't seem to affect the running of WoW. When I switch the laptop off it doesn't seem to have any beneficial effect on the running of WoW. The "latency" just goes rediculously high in the evening.

  • Just an idea but does it happen at 6pm precisely? If so, try shutting down WoW before that and seeing what the PC is doing. It might be trying an antivirus scan, podcast download or something similar.

Who is your broadband with and what type of router is it? If it's BT, have you opted out of BT FON?

  • Hi.
I'll try that tonight at 6. AOL are my internet provider, and it's a Netgear router. It's only been happening for the last month or so, before that everything was fine.

It may well be stress on your internet service provider. As a previous WoW player myself I know certain points in the week and tiems of day are very bad for lag. 6pm could be significant as the time when everyone gets home from work/school and either goes on WoW or at least gets online. If you have any other bandwidth-hogging programs running (maybe skype?) then try shutting them down...
I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something.
