Barclaycard Late Payment

I said that I thought the payment from my barclays account to barclaycard was immediate. I was told, "not now, it takes 3 to 4 working days.

In my experience the payment from a Barclays current account to Barclaycard is immediate. According to Barclays own website: "Payments to Barclaycard: These arrive on the same day but your payment will take a working day to show on your statement."

I suspect that money will only arrive on the 'same day' if the transaction takes place during working hours. If it's done via online banking at 11pm then that will actually go through the following day.

Daisy, whilst I'm inclined to agree with you given Mutter's experience I think I'd also be inclined to argue with Barclaycard given the vagueness of the statement (although it is virtually impossible to speak to anybody in authority at Barclaycard without spending hours on the phone).

I can't see why the faster payment system should only work during office hours as it is an automated system. I can most certainly transfer money to and from various banks outside of office hours using FPS and it appears to be near-instantaneous. I know that some banks (A&L for instance) still have limits on the amount that can be transferred in any one go but I've used Barclays to pay my Barclaycard bill when it has been in excess of £1500.

I'd be interested to hear what Barclays or Barclaycard has to say about this matter but I'd be surprised if it's definitive.

Update: A quick bit of searching on MSE and I found a post in the Budgeting & Bank Accounts section which suggests that the FPS official standard is "up to 4 hours" to credit the receiving account, this is to allow for exceptionally heavy load on the system but I suspect it could also be used as a get-out clause. In future I'll be paying my CC bill before 8pm on the day before it is due. ;)

Barclaycard payment was due on 24th Sep. Suddenly remembered last night and paid through Barclays online banking at 11 pm.
Received call from BC today whilst filling car and said I'd ring them back.
I checked statement online and payment made on 25th so too late.
I rang BC and here is my gripe.

" I can put these payments down as your payments for next month or you will be charged a late payment fee. Or you can make the payments again now by debit card and I will waive the fee" I opted for the late payment fee.
I said that I thought the payment from my barclays account to barclaycard was immediate. I was told, "not now, it takes 3 to 4 working days.
Amazing then how my payment on debit card to Waitrose shows the same day.

Why when the payments had already left my account should I pay again?
They are also a bit hot on late payment, this is the first time in years I've made this error, yet they were ringing me the next day.

Just to say, this is the first month in yonks that I spent on a BC, a small hotel bill and have recently had my credit limits upped a lot by them, their decision, not requested.
Have I made the wrong decision in accepting late payment fee and if so, what should I do?

I'm nervous now, are they going to demand credit settled?
Did you make the payment in full, if you did and expected no interest It wouldnt suprise me if your next cc statement showed up with interest on it.

No not paid in full AdamGrif but nor minimum payment.
  • Paying your Barclaycard through Barclays Telephone/Online Banking will be credited the same day if paid before 5:30pm on a working day but doesn't APPEAR on your Barclaycard statement (ie if viewing on Barclaycard's website) until the next day. The transaction is still dated the day it was done.

If you pay your Barclaycard bill by debit/credit card via their payment line then I think it takes 3/4 days to clear (ie when the debit/credit card transaction clears).
  • I have had separate issues with barclaycard - the call centre workers do not understand English which is difficult when you have problems. As you have never had a late payment (and they can only see six months statements on the systems) I would write to them and ask it to be refunded as a good will gesture. They have the power to refund it under any circumstance (although the system does have a floor limit to the amount but this is a lot) so its not an either or situation. the person you spoke to will be targeted into getting a payment out of you and used the late fee refund as a bribe to get you to pay up!
