iPhone n00b!

So, I finally got my iPhone 3GS yesterday. (32Gb - Black). Now I am a total iPhone n00b and coming from a hardcore Nokia and Symbian background, it's gonna take some used to getting around iPhone OS. Also, please bare with me if some of these questions have been asked before. I was never interested in the iPhone because it was well out of my price range until recently. I had wished I kept an interest now! tongue.gif

First things first. Profiles. On Nokia phones you can have different ringing profiles (General, Meeting, Outdoor, etc) Can I get a similar effect on the iPhone. I know it has the silent and ringing switch on the side, but I'd like different profiles if possible.

Following on from that, ringtones, I understand that I probably have to sync these via iTunes. Do they have to be in a specific format, or will it accept MP3, WAV etc. Can I also set different tones for text messages, email messages, video calls etc.

Jailbreaking - First and foremost, does it void the warranty? (O2/Apple) Also, can I actually jailbreak. My phone came preinstalled with the latest update (3.1) and is there currently anyway to jailbreak it. If so, can someone please tell me how. I've heard of ultrasn0w, yellowsn0w, redsn0w etc, but don't know what does what.

Any help is much appreciated. I'm sure I'll have loads more questions as time goes on!

Jailbreaking does indead affect your warranty, but afaik you can reset your phone to factory settings, as Jailbreaking is only software, but I am not sure, actually I dont even own an Iphone.

I am not sure how the Iphone OS works, but I am pretty sure, you can do mostly everything via applications. I think the apps are your new friends, though you need to find the right ones!

For your profiles I think there is an app available, which changes your profile depending on where your automaticly. I got "locale" on my HTC Hero... works a treat. (u need to activate GPS and stuff)

But again: Browse through applications, I am sure you find mostly everything there.

Mic2904 is quite correct; most of the iPhone's capabilities are explored through the use of numerous different apps. Check out the app store, and just perform a general Google search for profile apps to see what's out there. There's usually a free app which does a similar job to a paid one too so don't feel like you have to pay for the first one which appeals.

Ringtones can also be found on apps, or you can sync with iTunes. Probably best if you search within iTunes' own help files for assistance with this (I'm not a big ringtone changer - I'm happy if the phone rings!) as I haven't bothered with it. Also, the best resource I've found for all things iPod/iTouch/iPhone related is iLounge. Excellent product reviews, tutorials, forum news etc.

With regards to Jailbreaking, is there any particular reason you want to do this right now? I did mine (and unlocked it) because I'm with Orange and so I had to! However, I've been careful not to upgrade to 3.1 as the dev teams haven't yet found a way to unlock it. I believe there is a jailbreak for 3.1 though, although the last I heard it wasn't yet fully tested for bigs. Just to clarify (although I'm sure you already know) - jailbreaking does not unlock the phone to other carriers (Orange, t-mobile, vodafone etc), but it will enable you to download non-apple apps including internet tethering for example. As far which 'snow' to use, I just did A LOT of reading on forums/review sites etc and ended up pretty much just 'eenie meenie minie mo'ing it!
  • as far as ringtone is concern, you can make your own ringtone or just use part of a song as your ringtone, just search it at cnet video and there is a tutorial how to do it. . . . jailbreaking, I knew some friends who had their iphone unlocked into factory settings, no software updates can locked it. . . . haven't tried myself though...

The only app available at the moment to jailbreak your phone is PwnageTool 3.1 available on the Mac.

You won't be unlocking it to other carriers any time soon if it's already upgraded to 3.1.. but it sounds like your on O2 so not an issue for you.

Considering you have only just got it, dont need to unlock and are just getting comfortable with the platform, I would recommend not jailbreaking just yet. Play and download all the free stuff from the app store.

When released for 3.1 use Redsn0w to unlock. It does the same as PwnageTool 3.1 but is simpler to use and will be available on Mac and Windows :)

for info: Ultrasn0w unlocks your baseband after jailbreaking (normally using redsn0w), yellowsn0w was developed for earlier basebands. You dont need either of them.
