Sainsburys grated cheese cheaper than block cheese

I noticed yesterday that Sainsbury's own brand grated cheese comes in cheaper than the own brand block of cheese. It used to be the other way around!

  • Did you try it Sarah? I tried grated cheese (once) mozzarella - never again, it was awful stuff. (But that's just my opinion).
  • Thanks, my little boy loves grated cheese any type will do. He doesn't drink milk so good way to get a bit of goodness in him. Its usually the mozzarella from Morrison's that's on offer but will pop into Sainsbury's and take a look.

  • you will find a difference in the qualit of the product though - the pre grated cheese uses potato flakes as an anti caking agent
bargain shopping is the only way to shop :j
  • I used it now as pizza topping and it's fine to my taste.

I didn't know that:confused: I will have to check the label next time I see it. Although, I have very rarely bought ready grated cheese, only if it's a mature cheese and it's uber reduced.

I noticed that the basics cheese slices were only a very small percentage of actual cheese and there normal branded ones had about 3x as much in according to the ingredients so I agree the quality cant be as good even though they often taste nice!
  • just thought id add that tesco have cathedral city mature grated on bogof(it does also have the anti caking agent in though)

Its the same with many cut-up products (all except fruit :() I think its because with things like Cheese and meat, the stores can cut off the bad bits, then shred the rest and sell it- with the bad bits cut out- theres no way you'd buy a lump of cheese or a chicken fillet with a large hole gouged out of it- so if they disguise it but shredding it, no one knows any better. (And this is not to say its bad for you- I'm sure there is nothing wrong with most shredded foods). Also, if a fillet or steak is too large or small, it can also be shredded rather then risk being left on the shelf
  • Yep jenniewb is right.

It's the same reason that diced chicken breast is cheaper than a full breast: it's cos they use the off cuts that couldn't otherwise be used.

So perhaps that grated cheese you like was the good bits off a rotten block.

You're not actually getting the real deal and could be compromising quality and therefore they'd have a cheek charging you more for it!

i don't believe for food safety standards that they would be allowed to cut up and grate bits off a rotten block of cheese surely it would take too long, i buy grated when its on offer and the cathedral city stuff tastes exactly the same as the block

we also have ready grated mozzerella as i find that its slightly drier texture works better on pizzas (less soggy)
