Don't want disco/band - will guests be bored?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Definitely given me something to think about.
Much as we don't want a disco I might get my mate's band to play (they're v good). As 25 or so of the guests (my family) will have travelled about 250 miles to join us, they might want a "bit of a do" when they get there.
Will have to make sure the band knows there won't be a first dance, though - can't be doing with all that embarrassed shuffling from foot to foot stuff, and my BF just cannot dance :rotfl:
Thanks again...
That sounds like a realy good plan!
Oh we are not 'first dancing' either!!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0 -
As I'll be nearly 40 and he'll be 42, we don't want a disco or band - we'd rather have background music (MP3 playlist) and spend the evening chatting to our friends and family. Guest list will be around 80, including a handful of under 10s.
So, we're thinking of getting married in a hotel at about 4pm then after canapes and photos, sitting down to dinner at about 6pm. We don't want a top table or speeches or anything like that, and dinner should be over at about 8pm. We'd like the adjoining room (where the disco would be) to be set up with comfy chairs/settees so everyone can just relax and chat till the evening's over (about 11pm).
I'm thirty nine and a couple of years ago went to a wedding that sounds like yours. I have to say it was the best wedding I have ever been to (apart from my own of course!)
There were no kids mind you, but we had a function room at a great restaurant, and after the meal and speeches, people pretty much mingled amongst themselves. It was good to catch up with people you hadn't seen for a while and meet new people. It was also good not having to yell at the person next to you to make yourself heard, not having kids running all over the place and not being surrounded by drunk people.
At the end of the day, I guess it depends on the type of people coming to the wedding wether it will work or not. For the one I went to, it did.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0 -

That's something to think about too.
First venue we went to, everything happened in the one room, so with the Disco, it would have been too much for the people who wanted some quiet and the older guests whose hearing isn't as good as it should be.
The venue we are having now has 2 areas. One area with soft sofas and chairs then down some steps to the main area where the music and bar will be, which will suit our guests to the ground.
I couldn't, for my wedding, not have a boogie though!
Saying that, we're all different and it's whatever works for each couple and their guests.
The band idea sounds great though and don't forget they don't have to play all night, they could just do an hours set!

Exactly the same for us, we get exclusive use of the hotel for our wedding (not as posh as it sounds, its an ikkle hotel
) and there is a really nice 'squashy' sofa area away from the disco room! :rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0 -
I would LOVE it - I hate discos!0

2 areas sounds a great idea, as apart from the people that don't like loud music, weddings are often places where you meet people that you haven't seen for ages and want to talk to and catch up with things.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0 -
I think it's a superb idea. It's much better than turning your wedding into a disco.
You could always put an hour of dance songs on at about 9 o'clock or something? Just to get the kiddies tired out?
Brilliant, I wish I'd thought of it for my wedding. And very MSE to :cool:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.
