  • You can get to Rome on the train from Pisa - takes around 4 hours. No direct trains from Pisa to Venice, you go via Florence - takes around 4 and half hours. This is probably much easier and cheaper than driving.

  • Wouldn't recommend staying in Pisa. Not a lot there apart from the tower, and feels like a real tourist trap in that part with touts at the restaurants etc. Florence is much nicer.
  • Hmm, as others have said a day trip (if that's what you meant) from Pisa to Venice is very impractical. You really would only get a couple of hours in the city, plus as others have also said, it's not a direct train.

Likewise with Rome in a day from Pisa, you're not going to get too much time there. I'd suggest it would be better not to do Rome/Venice, rather than have a rushed visit and not get to see half the famous sights.
  • Hi

Thanks for suggestions. If not pisa which is the best place to go to see in italy?
And also are there any reasonable hotel for four of us. I want to take advantag of this ryanir cheap flights from stanstead.

There are any number of wonderful places in Italy. As mentioned above, Florence (Firenze) is great, and is only about half an hour away from the airport at Pisa. You could also fly into Bergamo, which Ryanair call Milan. Bergamo has a wonderful old town, and it is not too far from Milan, which many people like although some detest. Do note that Italy is a large country, so visit Venice one time and Rome another, or have a two-centre holiday and allow a full day to travel between them.

Personally, I liked Pisa and probably preferred it as a town/city, moreso that Florence. (Note:- I am excluding the galleries etc that Florence has to offer, and thinking purely on a basis of where I preferred the actual character of the place).

Pisa is about a quarter the size of Florence, and that is just the central part of Florence, and that is where you may struggle to fill your holiday. The tower area is fine, and clean, a little away from it you have some nice restaurants and shops.

Florence is a city. Therefore it is much bigger, and the centre is beautiful. However, like most cities, you don't have to walk too far out of the centre to see things in cities that aren't too good such as dirty streets, poverty, grafitti etc.

I'm not trying to say Pisa is better than Florence, just saying what I preferred and letting OP know that Pisa is alright although as middleman says, probably not much to stay there for.

    Enjoy your trip.

I think it is possible (having jumped from Milan to Rome to Venice in August over 11 days), but would allow much more time to spend in Rome, and even 2 days in Venice. The internal budget flights i.e Ryanair were very reasonable, far cheaper than the train tickets we priced, although take off and land you at the smaller/no frills airports in towns approx 1 hr from the city centres.

  • Depends what trains you take. Look up www.trenitalia.it

When we went a few years ago we took the Eurostar from Rome to Florence I think it was about 30 euros single, but it was maybe about 6 years or so ago so may be more now. It only took an hour though. Not sure about train to Venice, I doubt it would be straight through. From Florence to Milan you change at Bologna I think, or maybe that's when we went to Rimini we had to change...not sure now. Best way is to check the routes, prices etc on the website and see if the times are do-able.

Have you considered flying to Rome and flying home from Venice, and travelling up in the middle? We went for 2 weeks and did Rome-Florence-Rimini-Milan. Had already been to Venice so left it out that trip. We really enjoyed that trip travelling around, only place we weren't keen on was Milan (should have chosen Bergamo which we have now also been to and loved).

I would absolutely not try to do 1 day Rome and 1 day Venice if that is what you mean. Do at least 2 days in one or the other. And really for either there is no point in a car. Rome you are not even allowed in the centre with one. Buses and taxis are pretty good. Venice, need I explain?

If it is not such a short time you meant there is a rapid train between Venice and Rome takes 4 1/2 h, costs 61.80 € 2nd class adult 1 way, always book! Actually I would not do both anyway with children, too much of the same sort of thing.

If instead you decide car, and are in Pisa, what I would do is Lucca, Siena - jewel - you could do Elba or as far as Monte Argentario, Carrara (marble quarries) and, yes, Florence. If car just don't go too far, pointless. If you are doing it that way do go to Massa Marritima. My rule for Italy is big famous places are overestimated, small little-known ones underestimated but it is quite personal, doubly so when it's not just you but kids too.
Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.

You can book a train from Florence to Rome on a new hi-speed line. I think it should take about 2 hrs. When booking try to do it in advance, in July/August they had offers with 60 days, 30 days and a week in advance. If you book try to get the select as tariff 'Amica', this is a non-refundable non flexible tariff but you get a 15 or 20% discount.
