If I threaten to move bank accounts, will they give me the credit card I want.

Anyway, I was thinking of writing to Lloyds TSB and saying that I would move my £35,000+ a year salary and direct debits to another bank if I continued to be treated like this, i.e. denied the better credit card. I would also downgrade my account from silver to classic, denying them the monthly fee.

As Opinions4U says, it would have no effect and I don't mean to sound rude but £35k salary isn't exactly a mouth watering bribe (assuming you earn £35k this means you're paying in what, £2150 a month?) I paid in more than double this amount each month when I was with HBOS and threatened to leave, they wrote back and said 'return your card and we'll close your account'. I went (to HSBC and never looked back)!

Point is, it will have little to no effect whatsoever!

Go to another bank after you go in branch and speak to them, although it'd be better to consider the bigger picture and take emotions out the equation.... ;)

    Good Luck :D

  • In this day and age if you threatened to leave the bank they would probably hand you the close an account form!

Just a thought have you tried an alternative such as a Tesco card?
Spend on that and exchange the Tesco points for airmiles.

They do - well HBOS did with me! It seems unless you're making them a bucket-load they'll let you go, or unless you're rich like a footy star (or Christiano Ronaldo)...

LOL, i'd have thought he'd be better suited to be a kiddie playpen tester being he/she spends most their time on the deck slapping the floor like a spoilt little kiddy  (boo-hoo mummy, that big man just trod on my toe or tickled my shirt as he passed me)

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Sorry, i only deal in large flanges..:rotfl:

Seriously though, op i really would go into branch. Lloyds have in my experience been quite transparent in the way they view how you have conducted your account and how they score you. A rarity. :)

    Hi,

I am a Lloyds TSB customer and have been for two years. I have had a basic credit card with them for a year now, and have never been late for, or missed a monthly payment. In fact I pay it off entirely most months, including this month.

However, despite this, everytime I apply to upgrade to the Airmiles DUO credit cards, I get rejected. I have checked my credit report and it is spotless - the only thing letting me down is that my credit history in the UK is only 2 years old (I previously lived in Ireland). I'm sure the repeat applications don't help either but I really feel I am qualified to receive the card(s).

I should stress that I am not looking for an increased credit limit on my card, just an airmiles card with the same limit to replace my existing one, so that I can earn miles on my purchases.

Anyway, I was thinking of writing to Lloyds TSB and saying that I would move my £35,000+ a year salary and direct debits to another bank if I continued to be treated like this, i.e. denied the better credit card. Do you think Lloyds would care if you moved?
£35K isn't as good as you may imagine as far as salaries go and its definitely a small drop in the ocean to them.
I take home £47K, have a clean history, yet got turned down for a Platinum Card although i already have the American Express Platinum.
Fact is, they think you are a risk so won't upgrade you.
  • p.s. @ OP - Just to add, we're here to take the mickey out of what you earn cos £35k is a good wage, its simply just not enough to hold any sway with the bank. Now different if you had £100k of savings, then you may find they 'listen to your needs' a little more but even so, doesn't mean they would breach internal business risk cos you could still remove savings at the drop of a hat....

  • Thanks for all the comments. Perhaps I just have a poor internal score with Lloyds. I will go into a branch and talk to them about it.

However my question was never "why won't lloyds extend me further credit", but rather why does it matter to them whether I have a classic card or if I replace the classic card with an airmiles card with the exact same limit. They are still lending me the same amount, and the interest is still the same.

Anyway Ill talk to them and may report back.
