If the brand you want is a popular one, you might be able to get in on arrival back at LHR just after customs (anyone can confirm if they sell cigarettes? I know they sell smellies and chocs)

If so, take a note of the price outwards and then compare and buy either in US, on the plane or back at LHR

On our recent return from the U.S silk cut were £15 per 200 and if you bought 400 you got 200 free, so 600 cigs for £30.

I stand corrected on the price!

And if we got caught we would lose our job and its a tad hypocritcial too.

Its EU only if you want more than 200 cigs, without paying the duty on em.

and if i got caught with the extra 200, all my cigarettes would be confiscated or i'd have to pay duty on all of them... yes?

In theory they would all be confiscated, however good practice would be to allow you to pay the duty on your goods, which would make them more expensive than they are in the UK

which in a way sucks, cos they could at least let me keep the 200 that i'm allowed, and then either confiscate what i'm over... but maybe i'm just TOO logical...

    Where's the punishment, though?

You are being allowed to keep them, at the cost of paying the duty on them.

I seem to recall that the general idea is that if you break Customs allowances, then you forfeit the right to bring any goods in free of duty.

And I wonder the percentage of how many custom officers go above the limit. You know not all of them follow their own rules lol.

Same way as if you got done for speeding, say doing 80 in a 70 zone you get charged with doing 70 not 10 over the speed limit, the limits are there if you go over you lose the lot, in theory, and its not as if you would have a defence that you didnt know because you never travel

Your right in one way but the dept get something out of collecting the vat and duty they get nowt from seizing your goods and destroying em, the punishment is having to pay more than you would have paid for the item in the UK, which is especially frustrating if you have bought the items as gifts, personally I would seize me because im evil!!!!!

I of course cant comment on this but we would/should/could be arrested and lose our job if we went over and above.

  • Yeah and sometimes I have an extra pint on a night out even though I know I'm gonna feel it in the morning. We all do things sometimes we shouldn't but we still seem to risk it :P

Should be arrested for bring an extra carton of smokes???? Yeah, don't look out for the guy who might be trying to carry in explosives and want to blow up the airport but be on the lookout for a passenger or 2 with an extra carton of smokes or perfume. Hmmmm.
