Pew read up on how it is getting harder to find new oil fields to replace the ones that have run dry. The end result of this means that it is getting ever costlier.
I fully support any efforts to reduce carbon output but not neccessarily for the reasons everyone assumes. It is not global warming I am worried about but that we are at the peak oil output currently and with the likes of China and India demanding ever more of the stuff, you simply cannot assume that there is not going to be a shortage. It is why nuclear power is back on the agenda(I am against) and the escalation of renewables(I am for).
Mind you, I was watching 'Bang Goes The Theory' last week and that infrared rectenna they mentioned looks potentially to be the perfect solution and will revolutionisethe world if they ever perfect it.

No the oil will never actually run out. It will become so expensive that we are either bankrupted or forced to find an alternative energy source... or way of life - possibly with a much reduced world population.
There will still be oil around when one of these things happens.

I didn't assume that there wasn't going to be a shortage. There won't be a shortage actually, the cost will rise to an equilibrium with the demand.

Good luck with your renewable energy, you'll need it when the wind stops blowing. Those of us using Nuclear, or the centuries of coal remaining in this country, will be quite happy thanks.

Back to Hydrogen Fuel Cells, a guy I know tried this on his old vehicle and failed to notice any difference in MPG. After alot of dialogue with the supplier, he sent it back for a refund.

Now he's done some more reading and has convinced himself, the pipe wasn't wide enough and he needs more capacity in the containers to produce more HHO. He's now fitting a 'better' implementation to his new vehicle and is convinced he can save a few hundred a year!

I very dubious for the reasons already mentioned here and admit although not a science expert, I'd guess you'd probably need a far larger container than you could fit under your bonnet and would then have the problem it would require more power to seperate the gas.
  • Top Gear have shown a hydrogen powered car and I am intrigued by it. I don't like the idea that they could completely explode in a crash...but i'm sure that safety features will erradicate this in the future.
Imagine a Top Gear series comparing hydrogen powered cars alone. It would be amazing.

    Hi,
Interesting comments on the hydrogen thing.
I actually have one fitted to my car which I have had on for 9 months now.
Its not totally saved me a fortune nor has it saved me 40% on the fuel bill as advertised but there again it would be advertised as the biggest saving if thats what they have had from tests and not my specific vehicle.

I have seen all the different companies advertising on the net and yes I have very nearly parted with my hard earned cash to buy one.
My advise is dont ! most of them are scams, just people jumping on the bandwaggon of saving money so to speak.
Ive seen them advertised all over from £30 up to £2k Rediculas dont know how they can get away with it.
Some of the devices are so old in designs from jamjars to metal cylinders all claimin to save you money.
All I can say is please do you reasearch before handing over your money.

The device I bought was £550 plus VAT
It came with a 3 year warrenty and was fitted by a certified fitter who came to my work to fit it.
I have a certificate which I sent to my insurance company to say it had been fitted due to the fact if you buy one off the net and fit it yourself it will void your insurance.
I have also been told to send my V5 off to be changed to dual fuel to reduce my tax which I am pleased about but havent got round to doing it as I already paid for my year so will do it in feb when it comes round.
I must say I havent saved the 40% as stated but I have worked it out at around 18 - 20%. Not much but it is a saving meaning it is working.
I have also noticed my car is a bit more pokey around town and away from the lights which is weird as they said it wouldnt improve my performance in any way I would notice.
I think it will be a while before I see a saving but at least it is cutting my emmissions down and I now know myself it is working despite all the crittics out there and all the things I have read on the net.
I think if you just do your reasearch and get a proper company to install it then you will see the benefits but if you buy one of them things off the net with all them claims then you might as well burn your money.
I did see a thing on TV a few days ago about them testing a system but to be fair it looked nothing like the one i have and actually looked like something you would go deep sea diving with.
I did call the company and asked if they had seen it on tv being on BBC 1 I thought it would have an impact on them but they just said its a great example of what rubbish there is out there and how they dont work.
Apparently they tested that one years ago and could have told the BBC not to bother wasting there time. lol
Anyway up to you I suppose. to have or not to have that is the question???
  • Nev5,

It won't save you anything unless it's so magical that it defies the first law of thermodynamics, the law of conservation of energy.

I've got a calculator like that too - great for filling in my expenses :D
