New mattress?

I've spent the last few days looking for a new double mattress and I'm completely confused; and disgusted by the knowledge of shop assistants! The cheapest mattress I could find instore was about £200 and the sales staff told me it was only good enough for a guest bed if it was slept on a few days a year!!!! John Lewis had a double for £80 but I was horrified at the quality - I could feel more loose springs in it than my sprung out cheap Argos mattress.
I really want to spend as little as possible on a mattress but I still want it to be a quality mattress. I really dislike the idea of memory foam and I definitely don't want a no-turn mattress.
So far I have come up with:
Silentnight Miracoil Special - £129 from mattressnextday
(Miracoil 3, 8" luxury quilted mattress, damask fabric, individual support to stop partners rolling into each other, luxury fibre fillings, springs run from head to base so won't fall through on a slated base - like mine)
I like the 5 year warranty but I really don't like that people say it "springs" out after a couple of years ... My £20 Argos mattress lasted 5 years before it became uncomfortable ...
Sealy Posturepedic Backcare Regular Mattress - £185 from mattressonline
(Medium feel with orthopaedic support, posturetech spring system, evenly distributes weight, hand tufted, damask cover, 6 layers of high grade upholstery, 22cm depth)
Looks ok to me!
Evesham Mattress by Hypnos - £299
(Cotton and polyester fillings, 24cm depth, hand tufted, flag stitched handles, pocket springs, air vents run along the perimeter of the mattress, source 5, firm, 5yr guarantee/warrantee)
I really like the idea of buying from Hypnos. I really don't want to pay a penny more than this though so I was wondering if this was the best pocket sprung mattress I could buy for the price? Or would it be better value to go for the silentnight, sealy or another other recommendations?
I know people say to stay away from big brands but I'm really unsure how I would know whether or not it would be a quality mattress? Testing mattresses instore so far has not helped!
Thanks!

It's not just a case of staying away from big brands. There are some brands that really should be avoided at all costs (and you have picked two from the same group).
Hypnos are a good brand, but are very very over priced.
Chech the wording very carefully on 5 year warranties. Some only have a full guarantee for 12 months, then the next 4 years is on a sliding scale. So after 4 years you would have to pay 80% of the cost of a replacement mattress plus delivery.
You can get a top of the range open coil sprung mattress for under £200.0 -
Just throwm out my old king size mattress, looking to get a new one which is decent enough, i was thinking memory foam.
Base is a divan with 4 drawers. What mattress on a budget of say £250 £300 would do the job
Can anyone offer some tips?0 -
anyone heard of or bought a bed from dreamworks? It's a toss up between them and airsprung (or maybe Hush who are owned by airsprung - but appear to be higher quality) I'm considering buying one of their guestbeds.
they seem to be a small independent manufacturer - but of course, it means that it is more difficult to actually test the bed out!
thanks0 -

For that price your best bet would be open coil sprung with memory foam.
The optimum depth of the memory foam is 2" to 2.5". And the optimum density is 60 to 70kg per m3.0 -

Airsprung (and Hush) are a huge company.
Dreamworks appear to be a large independent company.0 -

however, i've just come back from this same local shop & after having a bit of a bounce around on various Millbrooks, have completely changed my mind & gone for a Jupiter 2000!
again, online i can't find it any cheaper than around £749, the same as sleeping solutions, but with a discount code of 6% brings it to £704 & then 20% back thru quidco = £563. it's a bit more than i'd intended, but you only live once!
well, it was delivered last Thursday by 2 great Millbrook guys (Dave & Ian :T). it weighs a ton & seems exceptionally well made. the important bit now, pure bliss! comfort & support in equal measure & i'm really having to drag myself out of bed in the morning now!
absolutely well worth every penny :j0
