New mattress?

I would allocate at least £500 - £1000 for a decent mattress and stay away from the cheap junk if you can. If you suffer with a sensitive back, you'll agree with me.
True, a good quality mattress should last at least 10 years, which is only £50 a year, or less than 14p per night for a £500 mattress.
You can get some very good quality mattresses for less than that from smaller independent manufacturers who like Hypnos still make them by hand, rather than robots like many of the big names.0 -

You really should do a search on MSE for the manufacturer before you consider buying.0 -

Hi All
Ended up getting the memory foam mattress from Dreams - £259. Not the most expensive mattress, but we've both had the best nights sleep ever since. And we don't feel each other moving around in the middle of the night.
thanks for all your advice Tim!DFD February 2012

Hello everyone,
We're looking for a a new mattress too As everyone has said, there's nothing like trying one out first, so we headed down to the local Dreams this afternoon to test some. We attempted 'blind' testing - i.e. lying on them all without looking at the price, to work out which we genuinely find the most comfy.
From that we've determined that a firm/orthopedic pocket-sprung mattress is the best - and with a thin memory foam layer on top, even better. We did notice that the more springs, the better - the top one came out at 3000 springs (kingsize) with a memory foam layer.
Unfortunately, the price is a bit steep - at £1129 for a double. Dreams have called it the Tranquility. It's manufactured by 'Treca de Paris', but I can't find any trace of it on the internet.
We had a couple of slightly cheaper runner ups, but they're still pricey, at between £729 and £999 (Cairo and Jefferson). So I've spent ages online trying to find online retailers that offer them cheaper - but I can never seem to find the exact ones. I find similar ones, that have similar descriptions - but I don't want any nasty surprises.
Any ideas on where to find the same mattresses online but cheaper? Has anyone negotiated a discount at one of the big retailers like Dreams?
And generally, which are regarded as the 'better' brands? There are so many and I've heard of none of them, so any advice would be appreciated.0 -

Trying out a mattress in a shop can only give a rough idea about specification. You really need to sleep on a mattress to know for sure.
More than 800 springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If a mattress has too many springs then they have to be so small to fit them all in that they are very weak and can get damaged easily. For this reason I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 springs in a king size mattress.
Dreams usually get manufacturers to make mattresses to their own spec (which is often lower than the equivalent), and then re-name them so that you can't buy that model anywhere else. Then they give a price promise.
If I were you I would stay clear of the big chain stores, and the big brand names.0 -
Hi there,
I've spent the last few days looking for a new double mattress and I'm completely confused; and disgusted by the knowledge of shop assistants! The cheapest mattress I could find instore was about £200 and the sales staff told me it was only good enough for a guest bed if it was slept on a few days a year!!!! John Lewis had a double for £80 but I was horrified at the quality - I could feel more loose springs in it than my sprung out cheap Argos mattress.
I really want to spend as little as possible on a mattress but I still want it to be a quality mattress. I really dislike the idea of memory foam and I definitely don't want a no-turn mattress.
So far I have come up with:
Silentnight Miracoil Special - £129 from mattressnextday
(Miracoil 3, 8" luxury quilted mattress, damask fabric, individual support to stop partners rolling into each other, luxury fibre fillings, springs run from head to base so won't fall through on a slated base - like mine)
I like the 5 year warranty but I really don't like that people say it "springs" out after a couple of years ... My £20 Argos mattress lasted 5 years before it became uncomfortable ...
Sealy Posturepedic Backcare Regular Mattress - £185 from mattressonline
(Medium feel with orthopaedic support, posturetech spring system, evenly distributes weight, hand tufted, damask cover, 6 layers of high grade upholstery, 22cm depth)
Looks ok to me!
Evesham Mattress by Hypnos - £299
(Cotton and polyester fillings, 24cm depth, hand tufted, flag stitched handles, pocket springs, air vents run along the perimeter of the mattress, source 5, firm, 5yr guarantee/warrantee)
I really like the idea of buying from Hypnos. I really don't want to pay a penny more than this though so I was wondering if this was the best pocket sprung mattress I could buy for the price? Or would it be better value to go for the silentnight, sealy or another other recommendations?
I know people say to stay away from big brands but I'm really unsure how I would know whether or not it would be a quality mattress? Testing mattresses instore so far has not helped!
Thanks!
