a really interesting topic OP, thanks.

I definitely agree that giving isn't about money but is about whatever you have SPARE (time, expertise, clothing or food etc) and can benefit others by. Those who are critical of you for not giving money are the one's who ought to re-evaluate their beliefs. Those who care about you will not care if you do not give money and those who care that you are not giving money do not actually care about you:o

  • Hi all,

I was posted this link by someone when i posted my SOA (incl. tithe) and i am so grateful to them because this is such an important conversation. Debt can be so discouraging especially when so many Christians seem to be prospering and totally satisfied "BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVOURED" It has made me feel as though i have less of a connection with God (sorry to off load but i'm really encouraged by your comments) THANK YOU.

I hope i will be able to add something in future.

How do i get back to this thread(?) (its my first day) hope that the right word but i want to be able to come back to this or other posts.

Thanks and God Bless you for your honesty!

  • I'm a follower of Jesus and have lurked on this board for ages. I earn a good salary but have been in debt for most of my adult life - my husband is unemployed at the moment and we are really really getting close to the wire. I want to be debt free but each month we only just seem able to make ends meet.

But this thread has me in tears, reminding me that God is gracious and merciful always, and on my side. Thanks so much for what you've all posted, it's strengthening me in my "innermost being"!!

Hoorah! So nice to meet others like you lot! Question - do any of you feel guilty or embarrased about your debt and how do you cope with it if so?

I don't feel guilty or embarassed about my debt. I just pray that I spend what i do have wisely.
I cannot change the situation I am in other thatn to keep plodding on!
The times have indeed been a test, but I gain strength in Him every day.
Regarding tithing: I used to help do the books at our church, and for all the big talk from some about how much they gave financially it was dispiriting to discover that the reality was VERY different!
I do contribute at the moment after EVERYTHING has been accounted for and I give & do what I can. God knows my heart!

I've read the Money Secret and it's very good. Just simple principles on budgeting etc... It's well written as are all Rob Parsons books. I think there is a work book which some churches use to run debt management courses to help individuals learn the principles of money and spending, want v need etc.... Care for the family is another UK charity who offer advice on money with a christian ethos. (they are a christian charity). I don't work for them so these are just my experiences. Hope this helps.
