Moving house - get Broadband quickly..

Hi all,

We are moving house in 2 weeks, and really need to get Broadband up and running as quickly as possible (my husband works from home). We've had lots of painstaking calls with Pipex and Tiscali (who we are currently with) and also BT and all are saying at least 7-10 working days to get Broadband.

Is there any way / any other companies where we can get this sooner?

Thanks in advance.

  • Get a dongle, from someone like Three: http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband

It won't be as fast (i.e. you wont be able to get a sensible ping for online gaming), but will be suitable as a temporary solution.

I've got one myself for when the landline isn't working (which tbh is quite rare these days) or I'm out and about.

Last time I moved with Zen they were superb but BT cocked it all up. Supposed to move in and get connected same day but waited three weeks. BT blamed Zen but there is no way I believed them.

BT did say if we ditched Zen and went with BT it could get done within a day or two - sick - monopoly on the lines!!!

  • Thanks, I'll look into dongles. I've no idea why BT can't connect that the same time as the phone line, but hey...
  • We moved but we were with BT, and they said that we could transfer the broadband with them, it was up and running within 1 day, and we could be with them for 3 months and allow to change providers once moved in, which was helpful to know. I dont know why they are saying it takes that long to set it up when BT did it same day.
  • We are with virgin, ours was connected 4 days after we moved in, which didn't seem too bad as some others we spoke to said it would be about 10 days or so.

BT told us it would take a month as the previous owner had not cancelled thier bill or notified BT of thier departure! As far as BT was concerned nothing had changed....

Tempted to run up the bill - but I won't :P

Check out the coverage in your area before you buy a dongle (or buy a PAYG dongle) because outside of large urban areas you'll often only get a connection speed comparable to an old dial-up connection.

I contacted BT and they said they would move my line in 1 day however they cannot guarantee what new number I will get - so O2 say I have to wait until I know for definate then tell them and then I will have to wait 6-10 days - such a hassle :(
  • ADSL is a pain - as mentioned if the person leaves without cancelling services it can take an age to sort out. The USB broadband sticks are pretty good though if you have decent 3G coverage, check the grabbit forum or hotukdeals, you can normally get the device for £10 or so, and the PAYG prices are reasonble if you only need it a week or two.
