Help with letter from Intrum Justitia

Hi all, don't know where to go and ask about this (newbie looking for help). My son has received a letter from Intrum Justitia asking for money but it's in Norwegian so we have'nt got a clue what it says. My son went to Norway in April this year with his Uni and broke his thumb, we take it the letter is asking for money for the hospital where he had treatment (hand put in cast and x-rays taken). I emailed the UK part of Intrum Justita to ask for help and they passed it to the Norway branch which replied 'Sorry the letter is in Norwegian, please forward funds into our bank account'. Now we have had another letter with the price doubled with a deadline (I take it's a deadline, we can understand 14 days on the letter) for tomorrow for payment to be made. I have asked for a translated letter and for them to let me know what the charges are for but have had no reply. My son is really worrying about this as he's afraid they will put his name on a bad debtors list. I have'nt got a clue what to do, I asked at the post office and bank if the giro which is attached to letter can be paid through them and have been told no as it's not a british giro bank form. Any help from anyone would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks for listening. worried_mum

No wait, seems a quick google search and hey presto, they are international debt collectors and seems that someone has been a tange ignorant when going abroad.

He had his EHIC card with him, and the Uni had group insurance but they keep fobbing him off telling him to sort it out and not giving him the insurance info. I looked on internet and saw they were a debt collectors agency but we've not had any bills from the hospital, and he was'nt charged in the hospital or given a bill for treatment when he had the x-ray and plaster put on.

Intrum Justitia the eBay debt collectors.....well that's the only place I've heard about them?

So Intrum Justitia Norwegian branch have sent you a letter in Norwegian asking for payment but giving no indication for what it is for?

You need to find out what the debt is for and who instructed them, don't be pressed to just hand over any money untill you have all the facts and information.
I may well be wrong and I'm sure someone will correct me but can a debt collection agency themselves double your original debt?


You could try contacting your local CAB for advice if all else fails.

You might be better if you posted on the Debt-Free Wannabe board, they have given advice about Intrum Justitia before, just copy & paste your post from here to a new thread over there.

I believe you can dispute the account but the experts will give you a definate answer on how to go about it.

was the triped booked through uni or individually?

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the debt wannabe board.
The trip was booked by the Uni and we thought that if he had to pay for any treatment the tutor that went with them would have sorted it out while there. Guess this was'nt the case, still waiting for the Uni to give us insurance details to sort this out, but will the insurers pay debt collectors? If they ask for any paperwork from the hospital there was none given or sent. I'll try the translator and see if I can work out exactly what the letter says.

My experience is that Norwegian businessmen all speak excellent English. Is there an email contact on the letter? Why not just send an email explaining the situation and asking for a translation?

I have sent them an email and the reply was 'Sorry the letter is in Norwegian, please forward funds into our bank account'. that was it!

What I don't understand is why it was not passed over to Intrum Justitia UK to be dealt with?

There must be some kind of legal requirment that the letter that was sent to you is in a language that you understand, not much good if it is in Norwegian and has been sent to a UK resident and you don't understand what it says!

I see you hav'nt had a reply on the other board yet, just keep trying.
