0870 Numbers in Halls

Hi guys, hope this is in the right forum! Please move if not.

I've just moved into uni halls with phones, but the phone number is given as an 0870 one! This means my parents will have to pay loads to phone me (unless they use my mobile which they will probably end up doing). I've tried the saynoto0870 website but the number isn't registered (unsurprisingly, as it's a private number). Anyone know if there is a way to find out what the ordinary regional code number might be?

Thanks for your help! :j

Phone your mobile from the phone and see what number comes up?

If the number is still withheld, try again dialling 1470 first as this overrides the withhold (on BT lines) and the number should then come up on your mobile.

If they have BT or TalkTalk (have to opt in with TalkTalk) then 0870 numbers are included in their calling plan. So if you have inclusive evening and weekend calls then 0870 are included as well and so on.

Go to Saynoto0870 and put in the 0870 number and you will hopefully get a generic number, try it, it might work.

You must have missed the bit where he said he tried saynoto0870

Most university halls phones are 0870 numbers. No way round it I'm afraid.

I talk to my son on msn and use free calls mobile to mobile if I need to speak to him.

In his first year I never called him first. I only chat to him if he needs to talk and it can be ages in between. He's there to learn and grow, the students don't want parents calling all the time.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Think they're on a Virgin Media package though.

That's a really good attitude! I wish my mam was like that! :rotfl:

Unfortunately, my mam wants to speak to me once a week, every two weeks maximum, or she gets upset (and I'm a postgrad aged 24!!). So it doesn't really matter whether she calls on a mobile or landline - she's gonna call anyway!

Thanks, I didn't know that. Think they're on a Virgin Media package though.

Then it will be Virgin's rip-off nearly 10p/min.

Suggest they get a BT line installed http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/free-BT-line-installation

    or something like Vonage
