How to turn a mattress without mucking up valance?

Our mattress is VERY heavy and as it's a turnable mattress we want to make sure we turn it regularly to get even wear.
I want to get a valance for the divan base (which is a not very nice grey colour so I want it covered up) - not a valance sheet that goes on the mattress but a valance that goes on the base.
So, these two old crocks have enough trouble turning the mattress over by sliding it along the base, up, over and slide it back down on the base again. All of which will make a right mess of a platform valance and it will be impossible to lift the mattress to straighten out the valance again.
Anyone got any good ideas? I can handle a sewing machine if absolutely necessary.

I'm thinking velcro...might even stick to the divan without resorting to needle and thread if your lucky?
Though what i'd try first is one of you lift the mattress from one side whilst other side is on top of the divan base whilst other one smooths out the valance underneath (and puts trust in other not dropping it on you!)..lower down mattress..tilt other way..unruckle valance. Though it's two person job really which isn't going to always be an option for you if OH not about...unless maybe you jack up the mattress with something underneath?
We just have a valance sheet but it doesn't quite reach the floor so a couple of inches of the divan base are visible. ..though we barely ever turn our mattress which is probably a contributing factor to why we need a new bed now (we did when we first got it though!). Actually was intending to turn our mattress as fed up with a particular spring stuck in my back..you've reminded me to go do it as i keep forgetting - only a double so it's just about manageable for one.

If there is plenty of room you could lift one side of the matress and rest it on a couple of kitchen chairs then pull that side of the valance straight and again on the other side.. we have to do the same thing as you to turn our mattress but I can actually wriggle the valance under the mattress without lifting it very much... good luck#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

:rotfl::rotfl:I was going to suggest a staple gun to fasten your valance donw but then i realised you would have to take if off occasionally to wash it.
What about taking out the middle square out of your valance, putting elastic around the top of the frill and just put that round the top edge of your base. The matress doesn't need to touch it then.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Hmm...just turned our mattress to find a hole in the mattress and divan base - about 6 inches from the edge and a couple of inches from where the two divan parts join..big enough to be able to feel inside and find a missing bit of foam filling with a spring underneath (made sure it's not on my side lol!). Definitely won't be buying a silentnight bed ever again that's for sure. Wish i hadn't seen this thread now..it's all your fault TomsMom !:p

Ah Silentnight - there's another thread I contributed to about Silentnight and my son and d-i-l's problem with one of their mattresses lasting only 12 months. Andy, if yours has lasted longer then you've been quite lucky. Looks like you'll need to start researching beds now!
So, taking everyone's ideas into account, and when I say very heavy I really do mean VERY HEAVY, it's all I can do to lift a corner to tuck the bottom sheet in (note to self - try and find some good quality fitted flanelette sheets suitable for a deep mattress) I combined them all and it's given me this idea.
1) Buy a normal platform valance.
2) Do as McKeff suggests and cut out the middle but leave a border. No stapling the valance direct to the base but Velcro attached to the border might be better than elastic. Other part of Velcro attached to rim of base - I'm assuming that could be stapled to the wood surround of the base.
3) Press Velcro on valance onto Velcro on base. Hey presto!
There, I knew you guys would come up with something.
Thanks everyone.0 -

Our wedding presents were planned to be vouchers but now thinking of asking for money towards a new bed (considering kingsize Layezee one from argos so we can ask for argos vouchers- not the cheapest one though) - all the usual setting-up-home wedding presents like towels, toasters, etc we've got - at least we'll get what we really need rather than cluttering up the house with unwanted junk or multiple toasters!

Glad i could help, it came to me is such a flash, i was surprised at myself.
and your idea of the velcro is a good one but not sure how expensive it would be to go right round a bed.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Hi Andrew.
Sorry to but in, but I should mention that Layezee are the same company as Silentnight. As are Rest Assured, Sealy, and The Pocket Sprung Bed Company.0
