egg credit card have charged me £16.00 for going over my cc limit

Hi, ive just noticed on my credit card statement that I have been charged £16.00 for going over my credit limit on my credit card. i phoned them and they said that because it was a standard they couldnt waiver it. its a shame I only went over my £26.00 and that was something that shouldnt have been taken straight away as it was a pre-order on dvd that isnt relased until October! I phoned the online retailer and they have apologised for taking the money straight away as there website states that they only take the money when they are due to dispatch the item but this doesnt help me with egg. I said to egg that if i have a credit limit then i didnt realise that with the introduction of the chip and pin then there wasn't a facility to go over the limit anymore. I dont know what the £16.00 covers as i pay my balance in full every month and annoyed that for something that isnt my mistake i've been charged for. i know £16.00 isnt the end of the world to most people but its still alot of money.

Is it worth pursuing witht he finanicial ombudsman as egg will not listen to me. It something that will make me close my account once i get the matter sorted.

thanks

From the OFT investigation £16 is the maximum Egg can charge before it is automatically deemed to be unfair (£12 for other providers due to a specific Egg appeal), this doesn't mean that the £16 is justified, just that you would need to fight your case with the ombudsman that it is unjustified as I would doubt Egg will roll over.

Your gripe is with the retailer, not Egg. Ask the retailer to refund the charge, since it was their unexpected actions that lead to the charge.

(I'm ignoring the fact that you're too near your card limit to begin with - you should really aim to reduce the balance on your card.)

I hope you mean your account with the retailer, and not Egg since they are not to blame at all here.

  • You won't get anywhere with egg, I went over by a couple of quid and it was only for a few days not even on my actual statement and they still had none of it.

Try not to be so close to your credit limit and chalk it up to experience. Not what you want to hear, I know, but still good advice.

I agree. The retailer is clearly at fault, but you must take some responsibility yourself.

If the purchase of a DVD was all it took to push you over your credit limit, it sounds as though you've been travelling with your bum too close to the ground.

I've got 2 cards within 15 quid of their limit at the moment - paying expenses for work of many thousands means that even though i pay off in full each month, it happens!

OP should contact the retailer to get them to either retract the payment or refund the charge. If retracted, can then contact Egg as the charge is no longer valid

I pay the cards off full as the retailer should have charged the card until the item was near to the release date then yes I spoke to them and they apologised but said it was best to take it up with the credit card. Egg wont do anything even if its refunded saying that at as i went over the credit limit then the charge stands esepcially since i was aware of the transaction, i just cant get it into their heads that the retailer shouldnt have took the money then!!
Normally its not nearly near the credit limit but we have moved into a new house and busy doing it up so alot more went on the card than it usually does but I was aware not to put any more on it because i was close to the limit and i though that the transactions would be denied at the til so didnt use it until the statement was issued. i have no other debts and any others cards are also paid off in full I only buy stuff if we have the money in the bank.

And yep i did mean I would close my egg card after this, been with them for 5 years never missed a payment always paid in full never had any issues and the one time i ask them to waiver the charge/help me, a straight no, not even we will mitigate the charge to maybe 50/50. I think thats what annoys me most. Although I'm probably not the sort of customer they really want!

Oh well I just wanted to see what the general concensus was on it. I was going to make a direct complaint to egg, still may do as you never can be sure who will answer but pay the charge cancel my account and make sure i get my cashback out of them!!

    They're fobbing you off.

If they promise to take payment 'later' (and you're relying on that) and then take payment 'now,' they're clearly at fault, and should not be sending you back to your CC provider.

    Name and shame them please?

i didnt want to get the forums into any trouble its the whole reason that i havent named them. As long as they cant threaten the forums for bad mouthing them or something then i will. I wont use them again either stick to my play and amazon for future. Still think if there is limit then that the limit and any transaction above should be denied, especially with chip and pin, years ago with those carbon paper things then yes it was instant so I could understand it.

i might write to egg and explain to them again and copy in the email form the retailer to see if i can get anywhere.

    thanks

Oh, don't worry about that, there's a whole board for doing that sort of thing: Praise, Vent & Warnings

I was just wondering for myself.
