Can't connect a second laptop wirelessly to Orange Router

Options
I currently have a Siemens router, which connects to my PC via an Ethernet cable. I also have it connected to my Wii wirelessly. I now want to add a laptop to connect wirelessly. Unfortunately the CD drive is damaged so I cannot run the set-up CD (not even sure if I need this!).

I have copied to contents of the CD onto a memory stick and have tried to run the set-up from here. It goes so far, then hangs when it tries to connect to the router wirelessly. I have added the laptop MAC address to the router profile via my original PC and I can get a wireless connection via the XP tools on the PC, so this is not an issue (although I do have to manually re-connect each time).

What do I need to do to enable internet access via my router on my laptop, and keep it always on.

cheers

Can you not just use the Windows wireless wizard ( in control panel) on your laptop, it will find the available wireless networks and you will just have to enter your passcode.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    Hi

Thanks for your reply. I can get a connection when I set it up manually. However what I am missing is:
    1. Pointing IE to connect via this wireless connection (it was set for a wired connection originally)
    2. Getting this wireless connection to be permanently set-up (so I dont have to key the SSID code each time)
    cheers
  • check your explorer settings.

    You wont need a cd.

There shouldnt be a need to manually enter an ssid every time , change preference in ie for router to be default connection.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

thanks, but how do I set the router to be the default connection (sorry if this is a dumb question - some PC stuff i'm fine with, but this whole connection stuff does my head in!!)

I assume I have to set the router details up somewhere?!!
  • Find out the model of your router , and go into its admin mode , usually its an adress like 192.168.1.1 or somesuch.Do this via a pc that actually can connect to the router , not the laptop.

Switch of wep/wpa , or any encryption , switch on ssid broadcast if its not on already.Your much safer imo using mac id security (at least until everything is up and running) , this way only your known pcs/consoles can access each other , the router and the internet. While you are there it may be worth your time renaming the ssid , changing the passwords and taking a note of them.

get the mac id of the wireless card in the laptop , same for anything that you want to acess the net or local..Add it/them to the routers allowed macs.

You laptop should now be able to connect , if not then go to explorer settings.Internet options.Connections.Choose never dial a connection. If you have ever used the laptop for dial up , or adsl , it may be this that is the problem.

Depending on the operating system you can right click the network icon on the bottom right and see if it finds the wireless.Make sure you have not set the router for b/g/n only mode. Most likley there will be two network connections , one for cat5 and one for wireless. Its only the wireless one your needing to check.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

    Hi

thanks for all replies. Finally managed to sort by switching IP/TCP and DNS settings to automatic on my router and LAN connections ('Obtain an Ip address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server address automatically') from these Network Connections screen. Right clicked on each and selected properties, then highlighted IP / TCP and hit settings.
