  • If you are travelling in by train, which I presume you are, as you are DorsetJohn and are starting your tube journey from Waterloo.....
You can get a ticket from Dorset that includes a one day travelcard, that will cover all tube journeys for a whole day, and it's cheaper than paying for separate tube or even Oyster fares.

Have fun at the footie :D

Sometimes it is cheaper, but certainly not always.

It may be an option the OP hadn't thought of.

Very true, it might be. I just wanted to caution against the commonly held assumption that it is always cheaper. Certainly is easier though.

As an example, a Super Off Peak Day Return from Weymouth to Waterloo is £51.60.
The same ticket with Travelcard added is £53.80.

So Travelcard costs £2.20. A bargain!

btw... thats for one adult only.

Its cheaper for me to book with south west trains . my son and I , using a family railcard can get a return price of £24.60 . add on £8.40p tube fare and thats £34 . much better than the price with the tube fare added on . thanks anyway

Are they Advance tickets? If they're not, then a day travelcard added on the off-peak return as suggested could be beneficial as you'll get a railcard discount on the travelcard which you wouldn't be able to if you purchased a separate travelcard in London.

Anyway, if you do purchase them separately then you'll need a zone 1-4 (off-peak) travelcard, as there isn't one for zones 1-3. It'll cost you £6.30 and you'll be able to get one for your kid for £1, if they are over 11 (they travel free if under 11 and accompanied).
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

Just to confuse you more, you could buy, from your local station, a travelcard from Surbiton, Wimbledon or similar station within Zone 6, or 4, has to be a BR station, this qualifies for the F&F discount so you get a 6 zone travel card for both of you for £6. I know you only need 1-3 but cheaper than an Oyster card, or 1-4 travel card option.
