Any londoners out there who can help with tube prices . It's a little confusing
I want to travel from waterloo (zone 1 ) to upton park (zone 3 ) (return) off peak for 1 adult and 1 child
Dont need an oyster card as this is a once off journey
we have a friends and family railcard too
What would be the cheapest option please
thanks in advance

Not a Londoner, but a regular visitor.
Zone 1 to 3 off-peak on the tube, £4.00 adult without Oyster, £2.20 with an Oyster card. If the child is under 11 they are free when travelling with you. Over 11 and under 15, £2.00 child fare without Oyster, £0.55 with an Oyster card.
Although you say you don't want an Oyster card, get one at the London Underground ticket office at Waterloo by paying £10 cash (not card) and then when you get to Upton Park, hand it back into the London Underground ticket office and say you want your money back, and they will give you £7.80 cash back (if you paid by card it is more complicated). If the child is between 11 and 15 they will need their own Oyster card.
Since you will have to queue up to buy a paper ticket, you might as well get an Oyster and save £1.80.0 -

thanks for your reply
but i need a return , waterloo to upton park ............ i think your prices were singles right ? is it cheaper another way fora return0 -
Sorry, I didn't see the bit where you had said return. Yes those are single fares.
There no such thing as return tickets on the tube, the closest is that if you need to make multiple journeys in one day, then you can get a (non-Oyster) travelcard for zones 1-3 for £8.60 or if you are using Oyster, it would charge you a maximum of £5.80 no matter how many journeys you made in zones 1-3 that day. A travelcard or Oyster price capping is a daily charge though, you can't use it outwards today, and then come back tomorrow.
If it is a return, then definitely get an Oyster, just hang onto it at Upton Park and hand it in when you leave Waterloo and save £3.60.
If you do get an Oyster, then as you are travelling with a child you will need to see the man at the barrier to let you in and out. Even so, you MUST tap your Oyster card on the reader BOTH when you enter the tube AND when you exit the tube. If you don't they charge a higher amount for an "incomplete journey".0 -

so can i go up to the ticket office and say " £10 oyster adult card please " and be charged £13 for it ? then if i spend £4.40p on it for 2 trips and hand it back in on the completion of my last journey the man will give me £8.60p cash ?
also when you get an oyster card do you have to fill in any forms at the ticket office , or does it get handed straight over in return for my cash
many thanks0 -

Yes those are the off-peak prices, and it is off-peak all day on a Sunday.dorsetjohn wrote: »also the child is 14
To get the cheaper Oyster child rate they would need an Oyster photocard, not worth it for two trips, so just pay the £2.00 (each way) paper ticket price as you don't need a photocard for that, and it is still cheaper than the adult Oysterdorsetjohn wrote: »we also have a family and friends national rail card . i read somewhere this gives you cheaper tube fares ?
It will give you a discount on Travelcards, but not individual tickets or Oyster useage. So not worth it for what you want.dorsetjohn wrote: »so can i go up to the ticket office and say " £10 oyster adult card please " and be charged £13 for it ? then if i spend £4.40p on it for 2 trips and hand it back in on the completion of my last journey the man will give me £8.60p cash ?
Easier to just go up with a £10 note hand it over and say, "can I put that on an Oyster card please". London Waterloo are used to dealing with people unfamiliar with the system.dorsetjohn wrote: »also when you get an oyster card do you have to fill in any forms at the ticket office , or does it get handed straight over in return for my cashs
No forms, £10 note over, Oyster card back.
And the same when you have finished, no forms, hand Oyster over, and get cash back.0
