DD is in reception & they have asked us to give a donation towards morning snack. Afternoon snack is provided by the government but the morning one is not. They have said that they like to give the children the same thing (or choice of 2) so they get to try new things & said they do this better when they are all having it.
They said it is up to us how much we give, but 20p a day covers basic & more expensive things. We can pay weekly or termly.
I can't fault our school for their contact with us. We had a meeting before they started (in July) & got a pack full of info. Then we get letters & info it the bookbag. They also update the website daily.
Are you getting the free milk for LO?0 -
In DD's school you pay for the milk after they turn 5 and fruit is always free. Although this is foundation year (4-5) but the fruit stays free. They get a really wide variety too, and the home-school communication is wonderful. The receptionist really is the heart of the school in our case, she will actively seek people out if they haven't had all the info, or something is up, or just to talk to you if she knows you feel down. She really loves the school, and deserves a medal!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

I dont blame you for being angry. Id be the same.
I think they think us parents must be psychic sometimes.
Ive never had letters telling me certain things about what my daughter should be bringing to school etc.never start frowning, because you never know who might be falling in love with your smile!0 -
my eldest whos 13 used have to take 50p per day into school for halve and apple at break time when he was in primary.
I thought it was a rip off when I was charged 55p for a whole piece of fruit in a waitrose cafe the other day - schools shouldn't be ripping people off like this?? £1 an apple????? :eek:SAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0 -
easy solve to prob - give an extra apple in lunchbox for break! my grandkids school charge 50p (no mention of it being voluntary when the kids were under 5) ty other posters will look into that! so daughter in law just packed extra fruit in lunchbox or if they had dinners just left apple or banana in their coat pockets.
schools like to make a profit by the way - just see what they charge for photos!0 -
My son's school goes a bit overboard on the letters home. They get put in his book bag and I often get junk mail in there too, e.g. adverts for local tradespeople, which drives me mad...
It drives me mad too. When did that start. A bit OT but ... We get fliers for all sorts of things (extra tuition, drama classes, clubs, catalogues, books to buy etc) I then get nagged all the way home!
But sometimes school forgets to tell us the most basic of things...like outdoor P.E days. They tell the kids, who promptly forget to tell us . The number of times my daughter tells me at 8.50am that she needs a costume for a drama session at school that day........:eek:0 -
Whilst it is not good that they are charging for the fruit, I can see why they need to make a profit. You would be surprised at the amount of resources which are provided by the teachers themselves, out of their own pocket because the schools do not have the funding needed to provide a good quality education. Resources are very expensive and therefore are restricted - thus us poor teachers end up buying stuff ourselves so that the children don't go without.0

Is it only in England that they do free fruit, because we're in Wales and my two certainly don't get it? DS has just started in the nursery department of primary school and they don't have fruit because they have their lunch so early, but from reception upwards they do. There was a letter home two years ago when DD was in reception to say they could either bring their own fruit or pay 20p per day (£1 per week) for a choice of what they had there. I don't know if they still do this because I haven't had letters about it since. Anyway, DD has always taken her own fruit in.
Some schools do have better communication than others, but most try their best, and to the OP, I very much doubt your 3 year old is going to be mentally scarred for life from not being able to have an apple in school until now. I'd certainly shy away from going in to see the teacher with all guns blazing as I wouldn't want to get a reputation as a parent to be wary of. By all means mention it if it bothers you that much, and perhaps clarify their policy on how they give out letters, but just be careful how you go about it at this early stage in your DD's schooling.
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -

I put them in the bin/recycling and if my children "nag" then I say "no". Simples:D
Now that DD is in year 2 I don't have too much of a problem with DD being told of some of the things she needs to do for school. I think it's a good way of getting them to start to take responsibility and well, if they forget to tell you what they need, that's a lesson learned and they'll remember next time.
