Grrr flippin schools

Sorry to do this and plz feels free to move/delete this post but I just need to vent about my little girls school because they have made me sooo cross.

Little girls is 3 and has been in school for 3 weeks now and came home yesterday asking if she could have money for an apple because she couldn't have one. Not knowing what she was on about I phoned the school and apparently she is supposed to be taking a £1 a week or an apple to school every day.
I was supposedly sent out a letter before the summer letting me know this - not the first letter I supposedly should have received but didn't get!

Tbh I was in tears last night blaming myself - It may be to do with the time of the month  but this really upset me to think that she may have been there asking for an apple every day when other children are having theirs and not being allowed one! And if that was the case then why in the 3 weeks she been there have one of the teachers not had a word with me about it!! Aren't schools allowed to communicate with parents any more? Now I'm wondering if there is anything else I'm missing that I don't know about.........

Thanks for just letting me moan.

  • If you're wondering if there's anything else you don't know about why don't you call the school? Communication works both ways. Check they have your correct contact details while you're at it.
  • I did call the school once she'd told me so that I could see what she was on about. They managed to send me 1 letter before she started to let me know about their open day so I know they have the right contact details etc and I've recently had to fill in a new form for allergies/doctors details/emergencies etc so thats all ok.

We did turn up in school a day early in Sep too unfortunately as we didnt get the letter to say the 1st day of term was a inset day but since that didnt really affect her I wasnt't too bothered about that one.

Just because this has been going on now for 3 weeks and if she hadnt asked for money how long would it have been until I had found out? Will be talking to her teacher when I take her at 1- with her apple ;)

Well that's very strange as the government provides free fruit for all infant school children in LEA maintained schools as part of the 5 a day initiative.

Strictly speaking it's all 4-6 year olds, which is reception to year 2, I can't believe they wouldn't give your DD her fruit because she's not turned 4 yet

I'd ask your school what they are doing with their free fruit and why your DD can't have it.

Hi, thats the sort of thing that would have upset me too. I seem to remember that they schools only ask for a voluntary contribution towards fruit. I think its a bit mean of the school not to give her a piece of fruit and send her home with a copy of the letter as a reminder to you.

Also you will not be the only parent in the school who doesn't seem to get letters. There will have been parents that have received the letter and totally forgotten about sending in money.

Do school do letters via email? Works for us as I always get the letters and can't loose them. If they don't do email letters you could suggest it - they might like the idea.

Keep it in perspective. September can be a difficult time for both kids and parents as we get settled into a new routine, we tend to be a bit on edge until they have settled. :)

Poor thing i would start doing as i do with my son who is notorious for not bringing home letters, everyday when he comes out of school i ask if any letters were handed out and if so has he got it!!!
Also perhaps have a chat with one of the mums and ask that if she finds out things can she pass them on to you, i have a very good mum who will text me any important info in case ds forgets!!!!

  • I do think that was a bit mean if they didn't give her an apple like everyone else-you'd hope they would at least give her one for a few days and if they ar that tight, then just 'bill' you for the apples shes had rather than make her go without. I would be the same as you-my son only has school dinners on a friday, and children who have school dinners can buy a drink of juice or a milkshake for 15p, but i didn't know that for about 3 months, so he was having his dinner and his friends all had their juice and he just had to have his water bottle from his classroom. I always make ure he has some money for his juice now when he has dinners!

all the children your little ones age should recieve free fruit and milk, ask them about this £1 a week sounds terrible imo.we give a donation each term of £1 for any cooking they may do over the term but definately not for fruit

a bag of 6 apples is less than a quid in the supermarket, ask what the school is doing with all that profit !

My son's school goes a bit overboard on the letters home. They get put in his book bag and I often get junk mail in there too, e.g. adverts for local tradespeople, which drives me mad...
  • Ask them if they have an email option - lots of schools do, that way you can be added to their list, you get everything as soon as it's issued and paper is saved!! If not the actual letters, they may have a newsletter that can be emailed - that would certainly cover all the big events.
