Can't disconnect from internet

Options
Last night when I tried to log out of the internet, I got the message
"It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account"
I've never had it before and there aren't any other users. I don't think I did anything different yesterday other than switching the computer off from the on/off button and rebooting when it got bunged up trying to save a little .gif I'd been sent.
I've trawled the web but can't find anything to guide me; any assistance would be much appreciated
Thanks

    First thing - http://www.techsupportforum.com/networking-forum/networking-support/126502-what-not-possible-disable-connection-time.html

If that doesn't help, run a virus scan as a virus sometimes prevents disconnection.
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

I had somthing simular to this some time ago and took me ages to figure it.

    1. Restart the PC, enter BIOS setup by pressing F2 or Delete.

    2. Go to Advanced settings.

    3. Plug & Play O/S Option, set it to Yes - Save setting on BIOS Exit

    hope this helps.

  • Thanks for your advice Kev1n3 but I'm being dumb and don't understand.

What is BIOS? How do I find it; Do I F2 while starting up like safe boot, or once logged in. It doesn't seem to work either way.

I tried the TechSupportForum route Mizzbiz but it didn't work and I've run through my AVG anti-virus without problem.

It should say, on a black screen near enough the minute you turn on the PC.

    Try a few of these: Delete Key, F2, F8, F11, F12.

You don't happen to know your BIOS version do you, I am using Award BIOS so mine is Delete Key. Chances are yours will be as well.

And if the above doesnt work, you can try using Services.msc in Windows to see if PnP is actually enabled, if it is, whether it can be restarted.

Also, can I ask whether you have broadband or dial-up?
If you have the latter, might be time to upgrade! :)
  • I've tried the keys suggested to no avail...
I don't know about BIOS but laptop is about six years old
I'm on broadband use a cable to router rather than wireless

Where do I find Services.msc in Windows?

When booting your system use the PAUSE key to pause the boot process and look for the BIOS hotkey.... It should say something like Press DEL to Enter BIOS. OR one of the 'f keys' suggested by Insomnica. Press pause again to continue the boot process into windows once you have indentified the hotkey.

Reboot your system pressing the key to enter BIOS. A blue screen will appear. Go to Advanced settings > Plug & Play O/S Option and set it to Yes. Then Save setting on exit. Note: You will not have the use of a mouse in BIOS but read the bottom of the BIOS screen for keys.

Take your time, as long as you stick to the above you won't go wrong.

Its always a good idea to familiarise yourself with the BIOS, over time you will find yourself having to use it to repair or change certain features ;)

Once you find the BIOS, look around it's other features, it will prove beneficial and eventually VITAL ;) good luck OP
