Help-----car purchase stolen

Hi everyone please advise not to sure were i stand just come off nights been doing some internet searchs regarding my problem but nothing of any note. I've put a deposit of £200 on a vehicle which looked good, full service record all documents present from a small dealer. I done a HPI and it came back not stolen, no loss, 1 previous owner, all checked out then a second text came in to car was recover feb 2007. So I contacted the car check people and they advise my the car was stolen but recovered.
Now we are buying the car due to expecting our first child, and both my partner and I are dubious on continueing with the purchase for numerous reasons. Am i entitled to my money back as this information wasn't disclosed, the car is price as a straight motor but isn't. I'm phoning them today but would like some advice before hand.....

Replys much appreciated Ben

    Sorry Ben,
But I'm not 100% sure how the law stands on this. If the vehicle was stolen and recovered after the insurance paid out, it would have been a total loss and the garage would have to disclose that.

If It was notified to the insurers but recovered before a settlement was made then it was not a total loss:confused:

What did the report say? ie Cat b,c,d ?

Someone on here will know, ;)

Op states from dealer with all documents;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

if it was recovered with no damage it probably wont be a cat a b c d etc
  • What do you mean by a small dealer, someone trading from home?
I'm very surprised that a dealer didn't do an HPI check on the car.

If you really want the car and can get it for a good price given the history it may require a little detective work.

Not all stolen cars are damaged and abused, remember that lease and hire cars not ruturned by the due date are often reported and recoreded as stolen vehicles. The drivers often innocent poeple are totally unaware of this fact.

You would only have a case if the dealer withheld or lied about it.

I think you need more clarification as to what is meant by recovered.

If it was reported stolen and then the Police recovered it and returned it back to the original owners then surely there is no problem?

Even if it was stolen and recovered after the Insurance had paid out then I don't really see what the issue is as long as no one else has any claim over it. The car will still be in acceptable condition?

But could be registered as a total insurance right off, and as such of less value, I'm not certain as I said but the OP is worried and so would any other future potential buyer

it could also affect insurance premiums.
    ...work permit granted!
  • If it was an insurance write off then it would be cat C/D. If it was stolen, then recovered and returned to owner, then does it matter? nothing was lost, no one had to pay out anything. Therefor no insurance company holds any interest in it.

    But as I said it affects the potential value. Or putting it simply as I can;

Given 2 identical cars at the same price, one has been stolen recovered, one has not. Which would you go for ?

    No prizes offered, ;)
