Ikea "Billy" bookcases...

Hope this is the right place to post - I couldn't think of a better one.

I do not drive or own a car. I need shelving for my bedroom and an Ikea "Billy" bookcase (80x28x202cm) would be exactly the right size for the space it needs to fit into. Can somebody who owns one possibly tell me whether the weight and dimensions of a flatpacked unit would be at all suitable for me - an averagely strong female - to lug home on public transport, or is this wishful thinking?

Thanks :)

very much wishful thinking, the length will be the same as the largest panel (i have the shorter 4-5 shelve version) and i wouldnt consider trying to carry that home! simply too cumbersome to manage, as well as the weight.
id offer you a life but im no where near, maybe someone else can, or hire a taxi?

202 - the 2m one - blooming eck chuck; unless you are geoff capes in disguise. Not only is it tall.....it's chuffin heavy. Been there, done that......and unless you get on right outside and get off right outside shop/your doors; I wouldn't consider it.

Ta everybody - I just found the link where it gives the weight and dimensions! I know they do a delivery service but it's extortionately expensive for only one item (the delivery costs more than the unit!). Time to sweet-talk my cousin into a trip in her car, methinks :D

Make sure the car is long enough, you won't be able to fit it. I took home the short version myself last week, and it was bad. But I also bought a desk (Jonas, with pull-out part - 36kg) and that was a struggle to get onto trolley first and then into the car on my own (I am also female, and not that strong, just strong-willing). It was a struggle to get it in the car, but it managed to *just* fit in!

Yep, asking your cousin for a lift sounds like your best bet to me.
I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help if you offer to buy her a slap up meal in the restaurant while you are there, consisting of as many Swedish Meatballs as she can handle and a cup of that bizarre but tasty red berry drink...

Just check the measurements of the box against the size of her car before you go to make sure you can get it in.

I got one home in my Micra. The box fits in ok if it's laid one end as near to the windscreen as possible, with the box resting on the top of the front and back seats with the passenger sat in the back hanging onto it and the driver not doing emergency stops ! This is a blonde's solution and should not be undertaken by the faint hearted ;)
