Faulty Renault dashboard - do I have any rights?

1) How exactly is the car illegal? I am not aware of any reason it would be illegal due to the failure of the board?
2) Who done the repair? I would put the mileage issue down to their lack of skill/knowledge more than anything else
Thoughts.
A 6 year old car with above average mileage and reaching the 100k mark will need repairs. A new dash system is not one I would say that is unreasonable. Its electronic and electronic parts will break. The other issues seem to be due to poor fitting more than anything else.
Overall you could use the SOGA to try and claim but I dont think you have a hope in hell. I wouldnt be at all surprised if you have been ripped off either by someone who didnt know their stuff and thus just replaced it.
Thank you for your comments. I checked with the police who advised it was illegal to drive without a speedo. I checked with Renault CS before having the dash replaced and it was all done by a Renault garage so I hope they do know their stuff.
Finally I do think a new dash is an unreasonable repair. And if it is expected to fail within the lifetime of the car (say 10 years) then why isn't it part of the service. Anyhow each to their own.
Once again thanks for your comments.0 -
Sounds like this will be a BIG future problem. The Frenchies are churning out 100'000's of cars with these dashboards. And the car mags are lapping them up on the wonderful design and je ne sais quoi va va voom. Most of the stupid journalists will never run a car for more than a year and know sweet FA about "ownership".
Sounds like everyone on here needs to complain to VOSA and force a recall. The man without a signature.0 -
drive at the same speed or slower than the other traffic?
use a sat nav as a temp measure to display the speed0 -
The thread linked to in post #2 article seems to say that Renault have accepted it’s a manufacturing quality issue and basically fixing for free in many cases. Might be worth contacting some of the posters there and seeing how they managed it.0

Ah sorry mate I didn't mean it like that - more that dealers would be more tolerant of problems like this.

I am not convinced the police are right. In actual fact I am not even sure its an MOT requirement. Maybe others could confirm either way.
If you went to a renault dealer and they couldnt reinstall the dash with the correct mileage I would be making major complaints. I dont believe for a second the mileage is stored by the dash and more likely as said by the EMU or such. In which case it shouldnt have been affected.
I think it depends on the situation. Just because it isnt a servicable item doesnt mean it shouldnt ever fail; could you imagine the majority wanting to pay for new dashes because a few fail. If its a wide spread manufacturing fault fair enough but it seems to be a case of renault are claiming its normal in which case buyers are suffering for not doin research.
Re the dashes - As far as I am aware it isnt overly common and Toyota for example have been putting them in cars for a decade now.0 -
I agree with previous posters - the car has 90k miles on it and is 6 years old, things are going to go wrong. And, at that milage, its likely things will continue to go wrong with increasing frequency. Its just one of the hazards of being a car owner.0

I wouldn't like to be sat next to the OP if the rear view mirror was knocked out of alignment if she thinks a failing dash is scary!!!
Crikey! I can imagine the panic and swerving all over the road when the dashboard stopped working.
I'm so glad you didn't run out of fuel on the way home, it must have been terribly worrying.. ask for compoBeware of imitations e.g. Robert Sterling0 -

Thanks everyone for their comments.
How does it work?
Two car with a known expensive dash fault……
Ones had £500 spent to fix it with the upgraded dash
The other hasn’t (aka time bomb)
And somehow the repaired one is worth less?0
