Marks and Spencer Interview/Assessement

  • Don't know if this is of any help to anyone but I had my assesment in Newcastle on Monday. They interviewed 4 candidates at a time but did the role plays individually. They run through the general stuff like pay, number of hours etc.. and the format of the role play. You don't know your scenario at this point just the fact that you get 5 mins to prep and you will be asked to fill in a 'post' role play form on things you thought went well, how you would handle it better. Then we were taken to our individual rooms and presented with product information cards for your role play. I had product cards for a piece of furniture, fabric colours and a list of stores that delivered to the area. At this point the panic set in as I was expecting the party food thing mentioned in previous threads. My scenario was that the store had sold out of this piece of furniture in the colour she wanted and only the display item was left which she wanted to buy but I had to break the news to her that my manager had said no way. Basically it was seeing if I could handle the problem and come up with other suggestions for the customer. My advice is don't loose your cool think how you would like to be treated in such a situation and make sure you come out on a positive note.

    If you want anymore info to put those last minute nerves at rest just let me know. Just be yourself and remember to smile.:A

    Good Luck..

    I had one this time last year. My rol play went as follows;

    I was given a pack of cards with a picture of a product on each one, mine was all food/drinks. Was told to display them on the table and familarise myself with the products. I was left alone for 5 minutes to do this. They made clear that when they return they will be in "character" and could not answer any questions re what to do etc.

    When she returned she was playing a part of a lady that was trying to organise a lunch for her work colleagues and knew nothing as the person who normally did the job was sick. She had a basic list of what she wanted food/drink wise so I basically had to show where the food items she wanted were and try and sell her other items and be helpful.

    I passed :D
  • Right ok?, is it hard?.. will it be ok if i offer alternate products if she is an angry person hoping to get something she cannot such as the women who needed to get the display item and that could not be sold. What do I take with me?
  • I went, and I got the job :T:j:rotfl:

  • Sorry Arooj,
    Just picked up on your thread this morning. Congratulations!!! :T
    I would have replied earlier but they have had me in training already and I start my first shift this afternoon, Can't believe how quickly this has all happened :eek:
  • My question for you is what are they looking for on their online questions? I have been rejected for a local store assistant post as I did not get thru their 'online talent screener'. This had multiple choice questions on scenarios that are unlikely to come up for the xmas role I was applying for but where did I go wrong? eg Petite lady tries on a large hat - unsuitable. what do you suggest - A) B) or C) - where none of the suggestions were what I might do.
  • I have an interview for a Xmas post on Weds. What were the answers again for the hat question? I might remember which one I chose if I see them again.

    TBH even if you wouldn't choose any of the options just try to imagine what M&S would like you to choose - anything to please the customer!

    I have an interview for a temp customer assistant this wednesday. It was a bit of a shock that if they decide you are eligible from your online form, you are asked to book the interview straight away! Have to get my head in gear now.

    Just wanted to say thanks to those who have shared their interview experiences, it is really helpful to know roughly what to expect.

    Boredoftherings - the question about the petite lady trying on big hats - I don't know if it is right but I said answer C, as I think they want you to be polite and positive but suggest alternatives as well.

    Good luck to others with interviews coming up!
