Originally a valley girl ( yes, user name was taken), I moved from The Rhondda to Flintshire many moons ago. Good to know where we MSErs are.

Daft question - why are Llanelli -ites called Turks?

    Hi there

In answer to your question about the Llanelli Turks, the story that I recall is that there was a Turkish Ship that had been at sea for a long period of time, and when it tried to dock at all the ports of South Wales it was turned away because of the conditions on board.
It eventually turned up at Llanelli (in those days Llanelli was a thriving port with a dock) and the sailors were taken pity on and welcomed ashore and given the help that they needed with medical care and clean clothing etc. I think that many of the Turkish Sailors settled down in the town, and made Llanelli their home.

And ever since the Llanelli - ites, or 'sosbans' as they are sometimes known(and that's another story), have earned the nickname 'Turks'

This explanation has been handed down over the years, so I can't vouch 100% for it's accuracy.............scarletslady.

Thank you very much, scarletslady! What a lovely piece of history.

  • Hi there Polly
    nice to make your aquaintance.

As the name suggests.....I support 'The Scarlets' whenever I can. Have you visited the new Stadium, Parc Y Scarlets yet?

Just like you I like to belt out a few hymns and arias.......LOL. We usually meet up with the Scarlets choir after a game and enjoy an evening of singsong. Magic.....just blows the cobwebs away........lol.

Have you been in this forum long.........I'm still a newbie in here, as you can see from my posts. Not like me to be quiet for too long.......LOL.

    Where are you?
Sorry you've probably posted, but I mave CFS/ME and find it exhausting to go back through the threads.
I now live near Oakwood Park, but a Scarlet till I die...lol.....scarletslady.
