alternative dial-up for ntl user

Options
is there any cheap alternative unlimited usage freephone dial-up provider when on an NTL line?

i recently cancelled NTL unlimited dial-up (which had become a rip-off, as it was actually more expensive than their broadband), but don't want to get tied into a long term broadband contract just yet. this may well have been a mistake, as as it stands i have no home internet connection at all. any suggestions?

as far as I am aware, there are no ntl compatible unmetered dialup connection providers, via ntl of course.... unless you opt for pay as you go

well, there is AOL that offer unmetered dial up on NTL, but then they charge £15.99 per month, so that's pretty pointless.

You may want to try opening a Telesave account and using the 020 access number (020 7043 9950) as you receive a 1p discount on standard 0800 access rates, which basically allows off peak 0845 internet access for 0.5p/min. If you then either ask NTL to move on to their 5p plan (they may not offer to do this) or join the phone co-op to make off peak landline calls for 4.7p per call, you can connect to any 0845 ISP for 4.7p cpnnection and 0.5p/min. Technically, the 4.7p/hour plan is designed for voice calls only - but I can confirm this method does work.

Phone Co-Op https://www.phone.coop - look for HOME USER tariff

hi stuart, thanks for this. could you clarify a few things for me? do either of these services require signing up/paying a subscription (i'm relying on a 10 minute internet spell in the library at the moment, so i don't have time to browse sites in too much detail!)?

also, could you explain exactly how this approach would work (i.e. who would i connect through, and in what order)? i can't find details of the 020 access number on the telesave site, at least not during my quick glance.

    thanks :)

no, no subscription fees etc necessary.

Telesave - https://www.telesave.co.uk - just set up with £10 credit via a credit card (instant sign up via 0800 066 4000).
Phone Co-Op - https://www.phone.coop - you'll need to sign up for the HOME USER tariff and they will require you to post in a copy of your NTL bill to confirm you are the owner of the line but there is still no monthly fee.
You will then get an 0800 access code to call via the phone coop.

So, your computer will need to be set to dial
    Phone Co-op 0800 access code >> Telesave 020 access >> Your 0845 ISP
    For me this is:
    0800 7815454 (pause) 020 7043 9950 (pause) 0845 079 5033
    It works fine!

You're right Telesave do not clearly refer to the 020 access code - it appears on the mobiles page http://www.telesave.co.uk/athome/mobilecalls.htm but even this doesn't refer to the 1p/min discount, but I assure you it does happen!
