Can mobile broadband be faster than home broadband?

Options
I know - how long is a piece of string!!

I am currently on Orange home broadband. I have a wireless router, which I have connected via ethernet cable to my PC. Speeds are OK (between 1 and 2 mbps) as I live quite a way from my exchange. It is also connected to my Wii for occasional browsing.

We are getting a laptop as well, and are considering Vodaphone mobile broadband. Advertised speeds are UPTO 7.2 mbps, but general views on the net are it is a lot slower, even in areas with a strong signal (my postcode shows as best coverage on their website).

What experiences have others had? Am I better to connect the laptop wirelessly to my existing Orange router (or will the potential of 2 simultaneous users really slow this down?) or am I likely to get better speed going wireless?

I know everyones set-up / location etc. can vary the experience but any views would be appreciated.

If mobile is better I will probably go for a bundled package with laptop, but want to have a clearer idea what will be best before committing for 24 months!!
