Renting new house, lock on door seized.

My girlfreind has just started her second year at uni. I took her down Sunday, anmd stayed the night. I locked the bedrom door. The next morning upon waking, the lock wouldnt budge. It was broke. (cheap tacky lock). I was disgusted because in the event of a fire, my girlfreind would have stood no chance. Not to mention the fact, that we were stuck there for some time. Until i had to remove the whole lock using a knife, which luckily she had in her bedroom.
What can be done about this? Surely this is unnacceptable behaviour?

Report it to the landlord/Letting Agent?0

""Surely this is unnacceptable behaviour" ??????
things break - at least have the common sense to ask for it to be repaired before ranting about "unacceptable"0 -

I agree. The behaviour of this lock is quite unacceptable. If I were you, I'd talk to the porter/estates manager to see if he can have a quiet word with the lock about its behaviour. What is the world coming to, if all the items we depend on start behaving like this. Soon the kettle will be refusing to boil the water. Forget unacceptable. It's criminal!0 -
Well, thanks for your hilarious responses. You wouldnt have faulty electrical equipment, so why would you have faulty DANGEROUS locks. Sorry for showing some concern. However perhaps the landlord should ensure the locks are in good working order?
Should have known not to ask for advice here. Extremely arrogant, pig headed, and a waste of time.0 -
You need to report it to the landlord. Where is she living? Is it uni place or shared house?
She should expect it to be replaced.0 -
Perhaps the landlord did check the lock and it didn't get stuck last time... How do you know that you didn't break it?
And there's no need to insult other people.Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0 -

Ignore the landlords who make those comments.
Unfortunately, some landlords have dangerous electrics too!
A decent landlord would have checked the property before the students came in.
Get in contact with the landlord and ask them to repair their lock and then put this in writing and get proof of postage from the post office.
You can always get in contact with the local council (where your girlfriend is) and ask for 'private lettings'. They can do a safety inspection of the whole property if you ask and then take action against the landlord for you if they find anything dangerous in the house.
It might be worth making sure that your girlfriend has elected to take Legal Cover too on her contents insurance policy. It will only cost a few pounds extra. Just make sure the insurance company state they will take legal action or defend against, landlords too. Should she ever need to use the legal cover, she will have to get this confirmed by the insurers first, in writing, before appointing a solicitor. The cost to your girlfriend will be the policy excess.RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I would tell your mum so she can speak to the nasty landlady who is trying to kill her little boy.
Alternatively grow up and sort it out.0 -

.
Yes, daily "lock inspections" are required.0 -
Was there a check in process where inventory was done? And was the lock okayed during that process?0
