I'd advise buying a car like a Micra, 106, Corsa, Punto, Fiesta etc for around £2000. For this sort of money it won't be a banger, but it will be cheap enough to give you peace of mind. My mother bought a 2000 model Micra in immaculate condition for £1700 a few months ago. I did some very basic servicing to it and it's been running like new ever since.

Cars below £1000 can be good value, but you are moving into territory where you can end up with unreliability.

I ditto what tom said above. The micra would be my choice if I was in your shoes. I got a w reg 2000 basic 1.0 model with power steering for £1500 on ebay over a year ago as our work car.

Spend £125 on all new tyres and oil service right after we got it. Only just recently had new brake and discs set changed which cost £110. These cost still dont add up to the going rate at the time I got the car which was about £2k. Micras are excellent cars, vey reliable and cost effective.

Nice 1st car to start without costing the earth. Built up the NCD and experience before getting something else.

    hi ditzy

i am 21 years old and hav a fab little L-reg micra ie. an old banger lol! but it does me fine and its caused me absolutely no problems.

i passed my test at 18, so i had had my licence for 2 years wen i got my car, the first year of insurance cost me in the region of £650 through Direct Line (that was before i found this fab money saving site :j ), this year, having built up my 1 year no claims my insurance dropped to £304 with tesco :j !

so for me, getting an old car to start with has let me build up my no claims, and have a great little car that i dont get too upset over if it gets a little scratched etc!

DO NOT BUY A NEW CAR ON THERE FINANCE.(or an old one)
i been in the trade many years now and i can tell you there a ripoff, your car is worth(as mentioned above) 10-15% less the moment you drive away in it so already your finance is more than its worth, also beware of the deals that you pay monthly for a few years and then get offered the cance to buy by paying the balance, you can get GAP insurance that pays the difference if you write it off or something but again its not cheap.

if you need money to get a car go to the bank or if you can do a card shuffle.

£800 sounds steep for a 1999 fiesta. I am male 21 with 1years ncd and one claim a year ago and on a 2003 fiesta zetec 1.4 i was £492 so with you being a woman i would have thought it wouldnt be much more but obviously there are lots of variable to take into account. With some companies if you day an older more experienced drive with no claims or convictions ic can knock a couple of hundred off the qDont buy on finance unless it is 0% due to the other previous comments.
An on the subject of telling them your car is garaged somewhere and it actually isnt. This is just as bad as insurance fronting (being a named drive but actually being th main driver) and you woul be as well not insuring your car and basically all you have from the insurance company is and expensive piece of A4. Also i know of some in sures that if you say it is parked in a garage over night and it isnt and is stolen or broken into they will not pay out.
The basic rule goes tell the truth and you will be fine as we all know insurance companies will do anythin not to pay out.

Don't forget to make sure that your insurance covers you to travel to and from your work but also for trips made in the course of your work. a lot of people learn this the hard way , when a claim is rejected.

Hi - if you are still considering a new car try https://www.youngmarmalade.co.uk who are a well established leasing/personal contract company.

Comprehensive insurance at 21 is free as part of the deal and they offer loans or leases from about £100.00 per month. They include 6000 miles and each mile above this is 8p.Also you do need a Pass Plus course. If you have not done this already it will cost you the price of 6 driving lessons.

Overall it sounds well worth considering.

There is a free insurance deal on new Fiesta Styles in May if you are aged 19+ but this is forecast to move to a min' 21yrs age limit in June so you'd need to be quick....the only downside is that of all the Fiesta range the Style has the least bonus available on it this month. If you have a 10% deposit you can get a deal for about £155 a month on a 3yr PCP deal (assuming 10,000 miles per annum) on the price you should be able pick a metallic one up for (c. £8175 this month for a 1.25 3dr).

It's all 'swings n' roundabouts' on the free insurance deals...this is shown clearly by looking at the current price on a higher spec' Fiesta...the 1.25 3dr Zetec which has higher bonuses available this month making the price you should be able to get it for c. £7345 but there's no free insurance deal on them.

You need to sit down and think how much you can afford a month as outlay and what deposit you have, and work from there on what you can get for that budget.

if you get on the 'new car' ladder at elast it is easier to then stay in something new every 3 yrs or so and reduce your maintenance costs. The cheaper outlay at the start on a 'banger' means you are always having to find new cash to buy the next car as once you've used it for a while will clearly be worth little on the second-hand market (and may cost you more to keep it running in MOT's and repairs) unless you are lucky and pick up a real bargain.

if you want a real cheapy new one to get you 'on the ladder' you can pick up new Ford Ka's at under £5k at the moment.

    Hope this helps!
